First off let me give you some background info... I'm 16 and am an avid responsible shooter. I have a small collection of guns which are "mine". These firearms I paid for and are registered in my fathers name... they will be turned over to me when I reach 18 and 21. For now they stay locked up and away from me unless my father is letting me clean them or shoot them under his supervision. I am also trying to get several of my friends into shooting aswell. Their parents however will not agree to this. Recently one of my friends parents approved the same deal I have going and will be allowed to get a "rifle" provided the same conditions above.

My friend asked me what rifle should he buy and begin to build. I thought instantly an AR-15 due to my own preferences but realized this was not a good first rifle. His mother almost screamed when she saw it. So we are trying to build him a rifle that is less than $800 (pushing it) and doesn't look "mean". My thoughts are to get him an Auto Ordinance M1 Carbine, forward scout style picatinny rail, and slap and Aimpoint on top. I think that this would be a good starting rifle because he will not be able to get the Aimpoint right away and the irons would be a good start. I also love the accuracy of other M1's I have used and the recoil. This rifle was given the ok... stock with no magazine present But however we are still open to suggestions... Mini-14's are ok, and garands aswell. Too bad the garand is outta the price range

Would you guys just list some quality guns that are decent at a fair price that are good for a beginner and "don't look mean".

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

ruger 10/22 with some high cap mags.

super cheap, reliable, fairly accurate, and in no way can it be an evil gun in its factory configuration.

he'll probably end up with one anyway, so just start now.

Send his ass over to RFC and have him buy a Ruger 10/22...

With ~$800 to work with, he can buy the basic model used/new and then pick out just about any stock he wants online, add a Hawktech (?) orange bolt buffer, a few 25rd magazines along with a few factory 10rd,  VQ hammer, extended magazine release, and even a new barrel if he wants one. If there is enough money left over he can throw in a scope from SWFA too. Buy Rem/Fed bulk packs of .22LR for $10.

The best thing for him to start out with is a .22LR

FWIW, you can never logically appease a libtard... Your friend could buy a single-shot Thompson Center Contender and 'tacticalize' it and the woman will freak out, even if you showed her that it can only fire one round at a time... Which has a slower ROF than a bolt action.

IMO, either buy a 10/22 or the AR15 that he wants.

Just as long as your friend has a level head and knows the rules/laws, I foresee no serious problems with him owning a firearm.

Examples:

Ruger 10/22 - OK

TC Contender - OK

AR15 - OK

****

Ruger 10/22 - EVIL

TC Contender - EVIL
I can't find the tacticalized picture... It used to be on Cabela's website.
