OK. I know nothing about S&W revolvers. Where is the serial number located on the pistol? When I swing out the cylinder there is a number on the frame that starts with A(I am assuming since this is it) and there is one on the arm that holds the cylinder diffrent from the frame.

I only ask because I noticed the store where I purchased the gun put the number from the arm on the receipt not the frame.

The number on the frame is the serial. The number on the crane is supposed to match the one on the frame unless the original crane was swapped out in the past.

I agree on the s/n being on the frame. I have a 686 I bought new about 12 years back.  Under the crane on the frame is thee s/n.  Below that is the model number.  On the crane is a three digit number that does not appear to match anything else.  I believe S&W has changed how they mark their handguns a few times, so maybe other examples have the s/n on the crane as well.
