What should I avoid, and which should I look in to?  LUSA, Vector, Bobcat (and now a new owner), there are a bunch of them.  My only requirement is 9mm, .40, OR .45, and folding stock plus all black.  I really like the HK USC .45, but I don't like the stock or color.  Any feedback and experience with them would be appreciated before I buy one.  Also, I am looking spend under $1500.  The SP89k by Vector has my interest the most so far.

Thanks,
Steve

Check the H&K forum here in Arms & Tactics. There's lots of info on MP5s extremely similar to this thread. I don't own an MP5 (yet) so I can't really help you there, but you'll find a ton of info there, and the guys in there really seem to know their stuff, too.

Perfect!  Thanks a lot, I didn't even realize that forum was there.  Mods, you can delete this thread.

Thanks again

There is an after market stock for the UMP and krylon will overcome any issues you may have with color.

The full UMP conversion is going to run me between $2 and 3000

keep an eye on the EE, sturm, and hkpro.com for used units, they are out there for decent prices.

I ended up with a bobcat about a year ago and I love it, goes with me to the range pretty much every time.

most of the clones will require you to replace a couple parts with genuine HK parts for them to function without issue, (extractor spring, and ejector, sometimes extractor) but after that easy swap they usually work great.
factory mags work the best, but I have a bunch of aftermarket mags that work just as good as factory.

vector has a good reputation, bobcat seems to as well(mine works fine), special weapons seem to work ok, although i've heard more issues than the other two, especially customer service with the companies owner.

avoid vulcan, it is a direct blowback action, and only looks like the mp5, but if looks are all that matter, go for it.

Check out the onpointfirearms.com website they've got some great video of a new MP5 clone that can be converted from 9mm to .45 caliber in a few minutes with zero tools...pretty cool stuff.

The only way to go is with a real HK-94.  You'll be dissappointed with much of anything else as it'll most likely be a Toad Bailey product that will be of questionable reliability.  My SW-5 was horrible.  I now have a Vector UZI to fulfill my 9mm SMG style rifle needs.

My Vector V94 MP5 clone has been flawless so far, 600+ rounds and no issues

My SW-5 from special weapons has spit 3,000rds without 1 malfunction.
I changed the extractor and ejector to HK ones and its rocks.   i have since added more HK parts and SBRd it, but i still have less in it than a beat up DOJ HK94.  Its my favorite gun in my whole collection.

Buy one of the Cohaire guns out of Shotgun news (and yes they are a Todd Bailey gun), and you won't be sorry, its the best $900 i ever spent

I'm personally done with clones. I have a sear and  they are not worth the extra cost to get them to work.  I've seen people dick with the toad's S/A guns and its just not worth it. Too much frustation and missed range time.

Good luck

Why doesnt Vector or PTR make some tooling to make real HK94/MP5s?

Or why doesnt POF bring the tooling here?

I have a Cohaire Arms .40 clone and it runs like a champ. No feeding or jamming issues. My partner (we are an 07FFL/02SOT) converted his MP5 clone to a Post Sample and it runs full-auto and three round bursts with ZERO problems. He did change his extractor to a factory HK item when he first bought it.

This is just our experience and I am planning on picking up a MP5 clone as well.

thanks,
Ron

Thanks a lot for the replies.  I was on the fence for the past couple days with what I was going to do.  Today, I find myself STILL on the fence.

I was strongly considering buying an HK USC and converting it to a UMP, however, I really like the MP5 clones (CA).  Also, it would only be about 1/3 the price.

Decisions decisions.  I guess my main question is, do the CA and Vector guns use HK mags?? Are do they make "clone" mags that appear like them?

Thanks again

Of course the CA and Vector guns use HK mags . . . they wouldn't be clones if they didn't!

CA makes pretty decent copies of the HK 10/40 mags that work very well.  I can't comment on their 9mm mags.
