Now we can all start warming up to the 556 a little more

Good now people can be happy and stop complaining about the 556.

It's great news for those who wanted a more traditional 551 and either wanted or don't mind it using the original 550/551 mags.
The mags seem extremely hard to find though and I don't doubt more expensive than AR mags.

Using AR mags is a major improvement though on the 556 to me. That commonality to be able to find replacements easily and just about anywhere is essential in new 5.56 platforms I'm looking at, for the world now and whatever could be down the road the way I see it. There the most common 5.56 mag out there and should be for a long time.

I'd still prefer a steel lower that was just adapted to run Ar mags, but even though I hate the fact that they went with the weaker, bastardized aluminum lower and screwed up one of the points that made the 550/551's so great, I wouldn't want to loose the AR mags use just for a steel lower as much as I want the steel lower.

I simply want an all steel 556 that takes AR mags and for SigArms to take the fu**in effort to make a proprietary LOP/cheekweld adjustable stock for it and I'll buy one for sure.

cool, does anybody know where to track down an original lower and at what cost?

So let me get this right .. you have to pay 1200 to 1300 dollars for the rifle itself. Then buy BUIS,then spend MORE money to make it look better.. no thanks.

U almost pay that for a new ar15 and do the same thing to it.

K.I.S.S  BABY.. Thats all i need.. until my eyes go bad...Also i said  to "LOOK BETTER" .. i didn't say anything about FUNCTION.Also 945.00 will get you an LMT RIFLE..PLUS, LMT BUIS FOR 120.00=1065 OTD.Also if you look at the prices for these SIG rilfes they are going for 1500 to 1600 dollars with NO buis. Also the ar-15 "LOOKS" fine in a A2 or A3 config with just standerd handgards.

I don't mind the new lower, I do mind the stock, fore grip, and lack of sights.......If they could do those, I would buy one immediately.

922(r) is why Sig cannot import the 551.

I do believe that these things will start to take form soon enough...

If Sigarms could ever get them out in greater numbers that is

I'd say for about 2500 bucks a man can have a very nice 55X.

Sure beats those 6-10K guns out there

922(r) is why Sig cannot import the 551.

Actually 18 USC 925(d)(3) prohibits importation of complete "assault weapons", 922(r) only prohibits assembly of "assault weapons" from imported parts that would are banned by 925(d)(3).

Maybe they will build a version with the folder and handguards and sights like the 551..........if not, maybe the after market will come up with a solution fo those who want something more like the original

$1400 SIG 556 rifle.
$1200 SG 55X lower.
$600 for ten (10) SG 55X magazines.
$300 for SG 55X sights.
$150 for SG 55X standard handguards.
$380 for B&T SG 55X four rail handguards.

Watching SIG fail at trying to convert AR15 owners all the while disgusting the original SG 55X fans...... Priceless.

Knowing I'll never drop that kind of money to fix SIG's bogart...... Depressing.

at this point its just a matter of time until the 550/551/552 demilled parts kits start to show up stateside, and the clones soon to follow.

for a retrospective, consider the HK sl8/g36 and usc/ump conversions. we all wanted the real, semi auto g36 and ump. but to stay "pollitically correct" HK chose to import the butthole stock equipped, anything but an EBR gray colored, ten round, distant cousins......the sl8 and usc.

American enginuity, and raw capitolism prevailed. the clones are available from a couple different manufacturers and sources, using original g36 and ump parts as well as some domestically engineered solutions. some companies have started from nothing to fill this niche. all for a rifle that (until recently, limited number) HK will no longer import.

now enter the sig556, its only a matter of time before the market for demilled 550's is realized, as well as people who want as close to a real 550 as they can get.

American enginuity and capitolism will figure it out, and we'll all have our beloved 550(clone), and no doubt some of them will approach the price tag of the original.

No, Bill Clinton's 1998 import ban is the reason the SL8 and USC are single stack butthole guns. Do you honestly think HK WANTED to import them that way?

The thing with the G36 and UMP parts kits is that a lot of them were imported for LE departments and are now being sold off because, quite frankly, the G36 sucks.

I'm sure that the number of 55x guns imported for LE sales is much, much smaller. SIGs have always been expensive and most PDs are not rolling in money. Every once in a while someone will have a post sample 552 for $3000 or so on the boards. That's about 3 times the going rate of a G36 parts kit. Buying LE demil kits is simply not going to be cost effective.

55x kits can only be imported now without barrels (thanks GWB). I don't think Switzerland is going to be chopping up their SIGs any time soon...they just recently sold off the Stgw57s that were approaching 50 years old.

[#24]
I guess I didnt realize the 55x series wasnt that popular with LE, my little town has 552's for their swat guys.

I figured most LE agencies were heading to the ar platform, and those who had the 55x were dumping them for the cheaper, more "accepted" ar. but who knows.

still wouldnt suprise me to see many more kits showing up on the market, if the possibility of adapting a 550 lower to a 556 becomes a common swap.

I cant wait to see em

Sigurd hit the nail on the head - it seems as though there are far fewer Sig 55x than G36 in the US.

Another problem is that the 556 uses a barrel/receiver thread pattern that is different from the Swiss guns.  So the barrels are incompatible. So a Swiss spec US made receiver would have to be made to use the Swiss barrels which can no longer be imported.  A nice Catch-22.

I think we need to just give the 556 some time.  I will be converting a few using Swiss lowers, but also look forward to seeing this rifle evolve.

Here's mine with black 551 swat handguards.  I posted these pics on sigforum.com earlier today.

I'm very interested in the rear sight that's shown in those pics.  It would go perfect with the original swiss front sight

It's really hard to tell at this point.

Give us a few weeks ok

Also, don't let this sight project hold you back from buying another rifle. I cannot make any promises on prices, or delivery dates. I can say that this is a nice rifle. It is ugly but we are working that out slowly. This platform has a lot of potential. That is all the motivation a future buyer should need.

For now.....

Let us know when we can do this and how much. I am getting my bonus next month and my local will have a 556 and it is reserved for me if I want it and after seeing that, my bonus is going toward the 556.

edit: Any chance you will be able to get the Sig folding lowers?
