I have been collecting Japanese Arisakas for close to 30 years. While I am a "purist" of the first order when it comes to originality and condition, I do not see the absence of the Mum as the kiss of death like many of my fellow collectors. Of course I prefer the piece to have a Mum, but I understand and accept why some don't. It's part of the "relevant" history of the breed. The rifle pictured above is a late production Series 11 Nagoya (as evidenced by the lack of dustcover grooves on the receiver). It's hard to tell, but it also appears from the full length photo that the buttstock is drilled for the so-called rope sling. Is there a hole about 1/2'' diameter through the buttstock (about 2" above the buttplate)? These very late and crude rifles replaced the customary rear sling swivel with a simple hole. If that's the case, this is a rare and much more desirable rifle (assuming originality, matching #'s and good or better condition). A nice late Series 11 Arisaka (once again assuming originality and matching numbers) is a $200-$300 piece even if ground. If it's a later production Series 11, with the rope hole stock, it's worth a minimum of $500. In the right auction, before the right players, it might go for $600-$700. |

Thank you excapee!! It does in fact have the side hole in the buttstock just fwd of the end of the butt. I would not consider it a great condition piece, however taking into acount it's age and most likely rough history I ain't all that bad. My best employee's grandfather just traded for it and is needing to sell it and a few others guns to get some finances in order. Thanks again, Michael |
