I'm looking around for a rifle for my 15 year old daughter for deer season next year. She is a little on the small side, and handled my uncle's Ruger Compact in .308. The balance and smaller size and weight of this rifle seems like a good fit for her. I don't want her to get beat up if .308 recoil is a bit stiff in this smaller gun, but by the same token I want to make sure she has enough gun for whitetails.

Is there much of a difference between the two calibers, really?

Thanks!

Rem. Md7 in 7-08 would be my choice. You can order it with a youth stock for now.
Of the 2 listed, I'd opt for the 243 as she can also use it for Chucks.
Recoil is less and with correct ammo it's a fine deer rifle.

Glad you got her involved,
Pete

243 will take whitetail.

I agree that the 243 is plenty of gun for deer with the right load. But if you reload or have a friend that reloads you can easily drop the 308  recoil to the same or less than the 243 and she can keep the same gun later when she needs or wants full power loads. Just another option for ya to cogitate over.

.243 is plenty for whitetail. Really an outstanding cartridge.

Stick with good construction bullets and the .243 is plenty good enuff.

I think the .243 would be the best choice given the situation.
