Well, there seem to be some nifty rifles coming down the pipe over the course of the next year or so, and I know I will want one of them. It is pretty well known that a bunch of Galil kits have been imported and Century (and most likely other folks) will be making them into complete guns. It also looks like there will be not one but TWO different U.S. manufacturers making Steyr Augs- one that is closer to the archetype and one that is a more updated and 'improved' version. Notwithstanding the Galil being a Century build (i.e. assume they are of the quality of the Century Yugo Underfolder builds), and with preference to the 'original' U.S. made AUG that takes AR mags, whcih rifle would you go for and why? Ok, that is it. Assume a good build on both, prices are similar- which one would you choose? Poll to follow... Dawg |

Well, I like the Galil and I think you should purchase both. I mean what is better than two rifles for twice the price? However, if you really have to pick one than..... No Contest…the AUG…hands down. Downside to the IMI Galil: 1. Max effect range of the Galil in 5.56x45mm NATO is at most with the AR/ARM 450 meters. 2. Length of the Galil is 38.5" long with fixed extended stock. 3. It weighs 8.6 lbs. unloaded. 4. These are the nations that have used Galil and out of those nations I don’t think any of them are still fielding the rifle in any great quantity: Colombia, Estonia, Israel, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Indonesia 5. Wars that the Galil has been used in: Yum Kippur War and the Lebanon War (1982). 6. The Galil has no last round bolt hold open. 7. Israel didn’t think enough of the rifle to keep them in service…a host of variable came into play, but in the end the rifle wasn’t deemed grand enough to keep in service in any great number. The Superior AUG: Where do I begin…I give you a few points, but I could go on and on all day long. 1. Max effect range of the Steyr AUG which is chambered in 5.56x45mm (although there is a 9mm conversion) NATO is 500 meters. 2. Total length for the AUG with even a 20” barrel is only 31” and that length can be quickly lessened due to the quick change barrel going down to the 16”, and to the 14” barrel that would bring the AUG down to 25”. Of course you can up to the 24” barrel with the AUG. 3. The Steyr weighs in with the 20” barrel at 7.9 lbs. and with the 16” barrel 7.2lbs. unloaded. 4. These Nations Field the Steyr AUG as their Main Issued Infantry Battle Rifle: Australia, Austria, Ireland. 5. Wars the AUG has been used in: East Timor, Bosnia and Croatia, Afghanistan, Iraq. 6. The Steyr AUG has a last round bolt hold open. 7. The Steyr AUG has a lightweight magazines made of transparent plastic which leaves no doubt as to the number of rounds one has left. 8. The Steyr AUG comes with a 1.5x powered scope. 9. The Steyr AUG has available through B&T and soon two American Companies Rails Systems. 10. The AUG quickly break down into 6 different components and one of the easiest to field strip and clean rifles I’ve ever seen. 11. There is enough room in the trigger guard to easily shoot the rifle wearing thick winter gloves. Finally, with all due respect to the AK-47 (one of the greatest rifles ever invented) the AUG will not be mistaken for an AK at the range. Seriously, I am very bias toward the AUG...I have an A2 and I freakin love the thing and couldn't be happier with it. When Pete and Kent come out with their rifles I plan on purchasing both. However, the bullpup isn't for everybody...some folks would just be happier with the Galil. |

LOL, it dawned on me tonight after posting this that I actually have 4 AKs, two of which are in .223 caliber, and that the Galil is in effect a milled receiver AK in .223 caliber. Unless the price comes in way low on the Century Galils, I am almost better off just purchasing one of the $279 Galil kits, stripping the parts I need to convert my SAR-3 into a lightweight Galil clone, and sellin goff the other parts to fund the process. It was so ridiculously ibvious when i though about it I am not sure waht the heck i was thinking! I figure with 4 AKs the U.S. made Steyr AUG is the way to go. Funny, however, that whenever you post a poll liek this you end up with nearly a 50/50 split every time! Dawg |

It also looks like there will be not one but TWO different U.S. manufacturers making Steyr Augs- one that is closer to the archetype and one that is a more updated and 'improved' version. Dawg Just to clarify TPD has made a couple improvements: Increased extractor pin strength, increase reliability on the extractor spring Runs M16 mags, any, including new to be released mag Threaded barrel accepts 1/2 X 28 FH including our AUG version in 1/2 X 28 Lighter weight barrel by way of slightly reduced diameter in or inside the receiver Receiver coated with thermally cured ceramic coating as well as all other main metal parts Vastly improved optics interface, room for BUIS Many US made parts Improved foregrip with rubber overmold US made receiver, not zink/aluminum alloy near pot metal receiver TPDSOT |
This is the one I am looking at...I havea TON of M16 mags, and everything about this one is what I am looking for...just please, oh please tell me they will be available in "Die Hard Terrorist" Green! |
| I have not heard of the Galil kits so I voted for the Galil since it looks like both Augs will come to market. I will get a Galil and an Aug. I want an A3 so I will probably go with the one that looks most like it. But then again I have alot of M16 mags. If I had my choice though, I would want a Tavor. |

This is the one I am looking at...I havea TON of M16 mags, and everything about this one is what I am looking for...just please, oh please tell me they will be available in "Die Hard Terrorist" Green! It comes in several colors, 15 I believe was the count. Custom color available. These colors are baked on to the base black and are extremely hard and hold up under the most adverse conditions. It consists of a ceramic thermally cured coating which exceeds all MIL standards. Same material on receiver and barrel. TPD, Kent |
1st AMERICAN MADE AUG COMPANY Coming out in January, uses improved American made AUG mags, 3 different colors, etc: www.pjs-steyraug.com/ 2ND AMERICAN MADE AUG COMPANY Parts for USR upgrade coming in January, full rifles around May (?), uses AR15/M16 mags: www.usaug.com (site not actually up yet, hence it not being hot) There is more info, but you should click on the two AUG threads here in the General Firearm Discussion board to get them. Both guns sound excellent... KOTB |
Thanks!

Drool! KOTB |
| If you were talking pre-89 ban rifles it would be a tough call, with a slight nod given to the Galil. Under your circumstances I would choose the AUG. There will be many improvements and refinements with BOTH US-made AUGs. With the Galil you will simply have another parts kit rifle. |
