Was at Buckingham Palace and noticed the guards were carrying some type of 5.56 cacliber rifle, (the police MP5's).  Then noticed video footage from Afghanistan of the same type rifle in service with British marines.  What is it?

To say nothing of the fact that it can't be converted to left hander operation.  Silly ass Brits handicap one seventh of their troops by making them shoot that damn thing.

The funney thing is that they have been working on the basic rifle sense 1947. Lots of problems and It uses a gas piston. I heard that during the first gulf war they pulled the old L1A1 semi auto FALS out of reserve they were haveing so many problems with it.

yea you could stop the movement of the bolt group by squeezing the receiver and they sent a field retrofit kit for a mag catch fence that was glued on but didnt hold in the desert heat...I beleive it was the biggest small arms scandal in british history at that time.Evene the H&K redesign isnt a 100% fix.Older rifles back then also had short mag wells that didnt support enpough of the aluminum mag wich could bend when a soldier hit the deck hard..one reason they went to steel mags..dont know if its still that way..I assume not with H&K design.

Chromelined,
I am certain that all the mags I observed in these rifles were of aluminum constructioni.  No, didn't handle them, but got a real close look of them in the rifle.

And yes, they are butt-ugly.

It's possible that they were using aluminum mags because they weren't exactly in combat.  The issue mag is steel now.
