| My local shop has been running specials on surplus ammunition and the have plenty of variation. Between English, Portuguese, South African, Argentine and Pakistni, what is the best to go with? any issues with corrosion from either? or should i just stick to shooting the expensive new manufactured stuff? |
|
My FAL loves 82 Argentine. Port and SA are good buys, too. The Argentine I have has corrosion on the outside of the case, but the inside of a few sample rounds showed no signs of corrosion. I'v shot seven hundred plus rounds without a single issue, and would buy more if I had the chance. |

Here's the order I would buy them in: British (assuming it is Radway Green) Port South African Argentine Pakistani Or, buy a couple boxes of each, take out your favorite .308 and figure out which IT likes best. Once you know that answer buy every round he has of that ammo! Seriously, British and Portuguese ammo is really hard to find now. I wish I bought a few more cases of it when they were available and cheap. South African is good stuff and will probably only be readily available for a few more months before it largely dries up. Never shot any Argentine ammo or Pakistani ammo... Spooky |
| thanks for the info everyone. as of roght now, im sitting on 1000 rounds of Port, 1000 South African and 500 english. didnt even bother with the other stuff. My gun shop also had some ratty looking stuff i think he said was Indian and im not touching that with a stick |
| Anyone else deeply concerned about what's going to happen when .308 surplus dries up? I think we're going to take it up the rear with ammo costs. The cheapest production ammo I've seen is Wolf .308, and I think that's like $230 per 1000. Steep price tag for crappy ammo....... |
no shit man, the ammunitionstore was selling it last year for $130/case if you bought 3 cases. |
Gone, done, sold out....toast. There's another thread about it right now. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=6&t=208318 Peak Ammo has occured! |
Great.....was about to order a bunch of SA this week. Now what? I don't even know if there is any surplus around anymore; the SA from Aims was all I could locate for like 6 months. |
|
So what I am hearing is that all .308 surplus is basically gone. No more to be delivered, period. So.........would it be wise to buy a main battle rifle that uses 7.62 x 51 right now? I would have to question the decision to buy a FAL or HK91/clone and be forced eventually to run new ammo through it at a dollar a round. Last, will this have a negative impact on the cost of those types of rifles in that they might become cheaper? Just thinking. |
The paki stuff I got had cases that were bulged, case mouths that were torn and rolled, and I have had several come apart in in the chamber. I cant find a stitch of surplus 308 in my area, its all just vanished

only stuff I've seen on the net is this S&B corrosive shit for $168/k www.samcoglobal.com/ammo.html#production |
I have 2 cases of Paki that came in sealed spam/sardine cans. I transferred them into .50cal cans. The cardboard boxes are a little weak but the rounds Ive looked at are in good condition. Other than the lot you had what else is supposed to be wrong with Paki? |
It is like shooting a glock. It goes kaboom. -Ben |
