A friend of mine has a Sako L579 Forester in .243. It has been sitting up for a while and has some scattered surface rust on the barrel. The bore looks fine and it apperars to have been fired very little. Its serial number is 81xxx. We are trying to find a value range for this rifle. We have found some for sale online from 650 to 1200 dollars. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JDGIII

No importation marks that I could see. Will it say "imported by XXXXX co." ?

Sakos imported by "Garcia" are worth less than their pre-Garcia counterparts. The switch occurred sometime in the 1970s.

If it's a pre-1968 rifle it likely won't have any import marks.

What would I look for if it is a Garcia import?

243 Forester came with three different barrel profiles. Sporter, mid and varmint. The two latter were considered more valuable than the sporter as they were and still are excellent Varmint rifles and that is selling.
On the market, most shy from paying up for blemished guns. Just the way it is. Take some xxx steel wool with oil to the affected areas. Also , shoot it. It probably is worth more for what it probably is than what someone may pay for it.  Pre Garcia or later, these are known for excellence.
