I searched, but I couldn't track down the answer to this question. Which are the best magazines to get for the mini-14? I know factory full-capacity mags are great, but how do non-le people get ahold of them? Given the recent redesign, I may get a Mini-14. One thing holding me back is access to good mags. Please help point me in the right direction. Thank you. |

20rd factory mags are readily available to the public, the 30rd ones are not anymore but still a bunch floating around on the secondary market. The 20rd mags are usually around $40 each. My local gun shop has them every now and then. CDNN usually has them or try impactguns.com. They are usually for sale on all the gun auction sites such as gunbroker.com or gunsamerica. -John

PMI mags have always worked well for me. and from the 'FWIW' dept.... PJ Investments has a few NIB factory 20's for $30.00ea. |

I had two factory Ruger 30-rd mags fail on me due to old/worn/weak springs. Outwardly the mags appearance was great, but those springs were shot. Once I replaced the springs with some 30-rd AR mag springs, they worked fine. Moral of the story is assume nothing, and test your mags before you come to rely on them. |

There is absolutely no substitute for Ruger factory magazines. They are the most reliable and best performing magazines for the Mini 14. Factory LEO marked 20 round magaziens can be had for 35.00 and less if you buy a quantity. Ruger temporarily discontinued the 30 round magazine in 2002 but has since resumed production to correspond to the 196 government models. Ruger has since altered its magazine protical and does not allow them to be sold by distributors and they must be obtained via letterhead from Ruger, so they are quite rare. Factory 30 round magazines can be had for around 100.00 or so, sometimes less. I personally prefer the 20's and have since aquired a dozen or so with 4 LEO marked 30's, which is plenty for now. For 20's, Ruger factory magazines are the best choice. Given the price of factory 30's, PMI is probably a better choice. PMI magazines are excellent and very reliability for much less than factory 30's. You can typically find NIB PMI's for around 30.00 or so. Original Thermold magazines and the 30/45 combo magazine are also excellent choices. Pro Mag has since started producing 30 round Thermold magazines which are supposidly every bit as reliable than the original Wilson Thermolds. I recently purcahsed 6 30 round Thermolds made by Pro Mag for 12.00 a piece and they have workd flawlessly. In the 30 round capacity, PMI and Thermolds are equal to factory magazines. |
