I was at the local gunshop today and he had a nice M14 from a manufacturer I had never heard of.  Can anyone give me any information about Federal Ordnance M14's?  The price was good but I want to see if I can get some feedback about the brand.

Thanks,
Mark

I've seen some threads about them and Sarco.  I recall seeing this on the gunboards semi-auto forum.  I'd do some serious research on this one before I plunked down BIG bucks.

It's a crap shoot with them - early ones ok - later ones all Chinese

Right. Early ones are better because they use USGI parts. The later ones used Chinese parts. There seem to be a higher chance of getting a good one if it's got GI parts.

FedOrd did have some really nice ones out there. I had one many moons ago.

Check out some of the M14 forums. I hung out there for a while while I rebuilt my M1A with all TRW parts. From what I read there those are the bottom of the heap, and the Chinese parts on the later ones sounds right. I love my M1A but I probably pass on the Fed Ord. As always YMMV.

Good Luck

I have one, all H&R/TRW parts. Nothing wrong with it.

Some work, and some don't.  I had one that was all Winchester, the parts were great but the receiver had heat-treat problems and was too hard.  This resulted in the rear sight serrations wearing off.  Once that happened the sights would literally jump every time I pulled the trigger.  For the most part it really is a crap shoot as to what you're going to get with one.  If you have one that is an early rifle (under serial number 5000) then you most likely will have all USGI parts which will probably be a decent rifle.  However, I would avoid the ones with chi-com parts.  If you're going to spend money on a rifle with chi-com parts get a Poly or a Norinco because the receivers are much better on the Polys/Norincos and the Poly/Norinco will be a much better value for your dollar.
