The nearest range to my home is several hours away, but the nearest desert is about 30 seconds away.  I would like to be able to park my car, walk out to an area, and turn around and range to my car (assuming I'd put my target down and shoot from alongside the car).

Can anyone recommend a good (cheap?) laser rangefinder for the simple task of setting up tagets at known distances in the desert?  I'd like to be able to measure out a fair distance, perhaps up to 600-800 meters.

I don't need it to be ocean water proof or night vision compatible or any of those other "tactical" things :)

Thanks

So, then, that's a "no" I guess?

Some of the longer range models (1000-1500) would reliably work at those ranges but they aren't cheap. If you're going to walk why not count paces?

If cheap is the most important answer, than a short range model which you could add the distances, 300 yards, + 400 yards = ????? Why didn't I spend the extra $100.

I consider the $450.00 I spent on my Leica 1200 scan cheap compared to some of the $1000.00 units out there. I really didn't have the money to get it when I did, but after all the use I have gotten out of it I am glad I got it.

If you stick a reflective sticker on your target you can range 800 yards with a Bushnell for under $300.

The Leica 1200 is probably the best of the cheaper ones.

For true rangefinding goodness, the Leica Geovid is an outstanding product.

Leica also has cheaper models that will easily range large objects (a car) to better than 800 yards.

I can range with my GPS. Since I have to walk out to set up the target anyway, it's simple.
