I have a VZ-24 Mauser built in 1937 that my grandfather sporterized a LONG time ago.  He gave it to me when I turned 16.

I want to have it rebarreled/rechambered for .30-06 and reblued.  I want to keep the stock that is on it now but the barrel channel will need to be smoothed out since it is currently cut for a Mauser step barrel.

Any recommendations for a smith that can do a job worthy of an heirloom?

Wilson Arms makes Mauser 98 military step barrels in .30-06, available from Brownells.  For an excellent gunsmith contact:

I saw those but I would rather have a standard tapered barrel.  Just personal preference.

Try E R Shaw.  The prices are fair and the reputation seems to be good.

I don't know if he does that kind of work, but there is guy named MauserMarty on Ebay and Gunbroker who seems to specialize in WWII era bolt guns.

Might not hurt to email and ask him.
