midway usa has a barrell stock combo for the mauser 98 to convert it to a 280 rem there where no reveiws on this product and i want one reason being is i want a good back up deer rifle god forbid my 700 fails to fire (i know very very unlikly but it could happen) and the 8mm mauser is alittle to big for whitetails

and can you tell me what the whole "mauser series 3 and or 2" means it makes no sense to me

How is 8mm too big for whitetails? I've used it myself on several deer, and I can tell you it wasn't too big. If you don't reload, the factory hunting loads for the 8mm Mauser are pretty anemic anyway. They typically fire a 170 soft point at about 2300 to 2400fps. That is definitely not too big or powerful for whitetails. The 8mm Mauser is actually one of the most underrated calibers for hunting in this country, IMO.

Huh?! Calm down?! I didn't realize I wasn't calm.

I just hate it when people "Bubbaize" a perfectly good military rifle. But if you absolutely must rebarrel it, go ahead. As far as the series 2 or series 3 goes. That depend on whether you have a M93 to 96 Mauser or a M98 Mauser. IIRC, series 2 is for a M93 to 96 and series 3 is for a M98.

IMO, you should really reconsider. If you want a sporter, sell the Mauser and buy a sporter. Just my opinion.

I did give you info you asked for. You asked about series 2 or 3 and I told you.
I'm sure that the kit that Midway sells is just fine. BTW, you weren't that specific about what information you wanted in the first place.

Now I'm done with you and with this thread.

Geez, someone asks for your opinion and then they jump all over your ass when you give it to them.
Dude, chill out, its just my opinion.

IIRC they are Adams & Bennet kits.  from what i have heard good quality/ fair price.  they aren't drop in kits , though.  you may need a chamber reamer   (can't remember if they are short chambered or not).  head space guages are also a must.  the .280 should feed fine, sometimes needs feed rail work when going to the shorter .308 length catridges.  there are also two types of "type 3" mausers.  it shouldn't matter for the barrel threads, but makes a big difference for the stock.  yugo 48 and 24/47, mex 1910, and CZ 24 mausers are approx 3/8" shorter than the gew 98/98k and VZ 24 based '98 mausers.  another option option if you like to tinker is an E.R. Shaw barrel  and a "classic" stock from Richard's Micro Fit 9(approx $250 in parts depending on options).  i think the lines of the "classic" go great with a '98 action.  i myself use the 8mm for hunting whitetails, but know many others that use the .280/.270 very successfully.  to each their own i prefer 8mm.

See, helpful people actually do exist on the internet!
Can you give me any pointers in my thread?

Put onr of these on your 280 M98 Mauser

Very simple to mount a scout scope or handgun scope.  No need to bend the bolt or put a low safety on.

Once you try a deer rifle with a scout scope, you won't want to use anything else.

The Adams and Bennet barrels are ok in quality (For inexpensive barrels). You will find that they will be short chambered. If you keep the cartridge diameter smaller that a .300 Win mag you be ok on the feed lips. An other Q's feel free to IM me.. We build a lot of 98 sporters in the shop and when properly done they will hang with the 700 no problem..
