Well? I have quite a few ARs, AKs, M1As, 1903s, 1911s, M1As and shotguns. Not to mention the pistols. When should I stop? Max |

Unlike many on this board, I don't see the need to have more than one of the same gun FOR MYSELF. My goal is to have one of every type of gun that I like (which is a whole bunch). Yes, I'm aware that there are many different variations of ARs (for example) but I'm fine with one for now. For 12 ga, I'm happy with one shotgun, my R870. I'd still like to get and AK, an FAL, and a few other semi-auto rifles. I've got several handguns, but there are a bunch more that I'd like to have. |
|
I am the opposite of niceguy, I want two of everything I own. With that said, I only intend to own two 1911s and two AR15s. One primary and one backup/spare/extra/gun for a friend. I can't help but laugh when I see these guys that have a ridiculous number of cheap pistols or rifles. Quality over quantity. |
Add a Mosin and a K31 (becaues the old stuff is cool and bolt guns are fun) and I'd call that a perfect list. And oh yea, my pellet rifle sees most of the action on my range down my hallway, since the real range is about a 45 minute drive. |
Agreed on the Surplus bolts but, 762x54 and 8mm is a bit hard to find in TSHTF, Swap a rebarreled enflied in 308 or perhaps a 308 tanker Garand and your GTG,.. And Im not only the shortlist president Im also a member, recently sold everything but the above list, Just need a nice Remy 700 LTR to complete..............Udog |

I think every American that is worthy of the name should have a semi automatic rifle military style rifle in a readily available caliber and a good defensive pistol. They should also have a good .22 rifle and pistol. There are valid arguments that there should be a defensive configured shotgun and of course any guns for whatever hunting you enjoy. There are also valid arguments that a backup for each of the first two are neccesary. If you have a wife you need a pistol and long arm for her. That leaves the average married man needing at least 6 and as many as 10 depending on hunting. Anything else is collecting. |

My thoughts: You need at least 2 guns because if you clean your weapons like you should, one will inevitablly be out of service about 1 evening every 2 weeks or so, so you need a weapon for that time, plus your primary could have other trouble and have to be sent out or parts ordered (murphys law dictates this will happen while you are being stocked by a chainsaw murderer). You need 2 guns in any caliber you own one in, reason: you should stock pile lots of ammo, if your only .38, .45, .40, ect, ect. gets lost/stolen/KBed/confiscated as part of investigation, you would be stuck with thousands of rounds of ammo for a weapon you now no longer have. I try not to own any odd ball calibers, I stick to .45 & .38 for handguns, 12ga. for shottys, .223/5.56mm, .308/7.62 X 51mm & 7.63 X 39 for rifles. YMMV |

Like everything else in my house, I refuse to pay for storage. Thus, if it doesn't get used in 1-2 years, it goes out the door to the trash or sold. So pick what you like. If you find yourself not shooting/enjoying it, sell it and save the money for more ammo on the stuff you do shoot, or something different. That's my philosophy anyway. I'm not really into collecting either. |
There's the "inhetited it and haven't touched it since" guns as well. |
Maybe one day I'll take a photo of them all together. Right now, all I have are separate photos of each -- which would bog down all the dial-up guys such as myself. For now, I'll just list 'em: Full-auto suppressed Colt M4 Carbine (fully dressed) Suppressed Remington 700P (fully dressed) Suppressed HK 45 Tactical Suppressed Ruger 77/22 Benelli M1014 Bulgarian sidefolder AK-74M (everything bought, just waiting to be assembled) Remington 870 Super Mag 2005 Model with thumbhole stock (Nikon scope, both deer and turkey barrels, all camo) |
Poor analogy. Just because I choose to only own 4 guns doesn't mean I haven't shot hundreds of different ones. |
If you ever need help shooting those weapons, I dont live too far away in Champaign. RemMan |
| No matter what you do NEVER, EVER set a number, or even think of a number that might be enough. And definately don't tell your wife that there is a point that will be enough. Because there isn't. There will always be something else. I remember back when I thought "if I fill this safe, that will be great". Safe #2 is full now. Man, I need another safe. |

1 cheap plinker (Marlin .22 rifle) 1 shotgun for deadbolts/hunting (Remington 870) 1 sniper/hunting rifle (Remington 700) 1 medium range rifle (AR-15) 1 CQB SMG (UZI) 1 machine pistol for CCW (Mini UZI) 1 full size pistol (Beretta 92FS) 1 compact pistol (Sig P228) 1 sub compact pistol (Kel-Tec .380) They all have their purposes. But I must say I carry my pistols the most. But I love shooting my UZI's the most. But of course the AR-15 is the most fun to customize. And when I’m poor then the Marlin .22 comes out until I can get more funding. The Remingtons don’t get out as often as I would like, but I have them if I need them. And yes you are right I will always want more for my collection. I just love weapons. |
You are a Sick, Sick Man...Is there rehab for us sickies?? |
You lucky guy , Would you accepy my right nutfor that M4? |

Since ammo for old bolt actions is both plentiful and cheap, having enough in a SHTF scenario is not a problem. I can get 3000 round of 8mm or 7.62 x 54r ammo for less than the cost of 1000 rounds of most 5.56 ammo. I can also purchase between 5 and 10 milsurps for the cost of one name brand AR. Depending upon how long the SHTF situation lasts, those old bolt action milsups will keep firing long after the AR's and AK's have either run out of ammo or broken down. |
We've now strayed completely off topic, but what is this persistant misconception that you're going to have to use your same firearm forever in this mythical SHTF scenario? |
