i don't know if this is the right forum for this but i ask anyways.  a friend of mine asked me if i knew any good gun history books.  so i said i would find out.  she wants to get her bf who is now in iraq something dealing with the history of firearms and maybe the history of the industry.  i remember thinking that misfire was a good book but thats probably not what he wants to be reading while in a combat zone.

This would be a great book for him if he is into the history of firearms.  Not a complete history, mind you, but a great read:

Check around the used book sections on Ebay, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble for a copy of "Small Arms of The World" by either WHB Smith, or later, Etzell.
These were printed for a number of years, with changes every few years to cover newer guns.

This is an older book.  The first section is a general history of firearms from the first cannon-like gun in the Middle Ages, to modern weapons.

The second sections are the development history of various types of guns.
Theres a section on the single shot rifle, repeating rifles, revolvers and pistols, submachine guns, auto rifles, bolt action rifles, and machine guns.

The last sections are the older and current arms in use, listed by country.
As example, the US section discusses the older weapons in use before WWI, then gives very good descriptions, history, and disassembly of US pistols, bolt rifles, semi auto rifles like the M1 and M1 carbine, Submachine guns, the BAR, then gets into light and heavy machine guns.

The Russian section starts off with bolt action guns as used under the Czar, and ends up with the AK-47 and light and heavy machine guns.

"Small Arms of the World" is one of THE great classic gun books, and is found in most experts libraries.
