Pick up a M44 today at a fun show. My 1st 7.62 x 54r rifle. The barrel looks great. No pitting and the rifling stands out. Hopfully I will get to the range some time this week.  Anything I should know about these rifles? Its CAI mark made in 1953 by Hungary. All matching numbers

And following forum rules here is a pic.

If you have the time and patience to reload, buy up the regular wolf 147 gr.  New production 54r, brass case, and berdan primed.  Surplus rifle has plans for a deprimer build that runs about 6-10 dollars production.  The only hard part would be finding berdan primers, but they can be found.  Buy in bulk, to save on hazmat fees.

That is what I was thinking. Going to try and buy one case a month. But will depend on money.

I was wondering about reloading. Havn't seen much brass for it. My dad has loaded berdan primers before, said it was a PIA so he went back to boxer.

There is boxer primed 54r, however it's price range is up there with any obscure caliber like 7.7 Jap.  I think remington makes new producton boxer brass, but I can't be sure.  The cheap wolf is copper washed brass, and the biggest PIA with reloading berdan primed brass is the fact that you're basically down to a single stage press, and you're adding an extra step.

I have a new M44 and love it.  I also have the 91/30, both Russian.  If you shoot corrosive, be sure to clean the heck out of the barrel after you shoot.  The older the ammo, the more crud you'll get out of the barrel.  Corrosive ammo is cheap and available in many types...but probably not for long.  Non-corrosive would be preferable although it is always more expensive.  Be sure to get sealed tins of the older ammo.  These guns are very accurate.  The M44 will scare the pants off someone next to you at the range!

The big brown truck showed up today with 880 rounds of Polish silvertip.  I paid $63 for it.  Can't beat that!  I love my M44.  There's nothing like a bolt rifle.
