I am new to lever action rifles. I have a question for hunters who use lever actions. What kind of range can I expect from a Wichester 94, 30-30, 20" barrel? It is scoped. Do I zero at 100 yards like any other rifle? |

I got one in a trade last year, and am now kicking myself in the ass for not getting one years ago. It is my first lever gun and I love shooting it. Seems to have enough guts to pop medium game out to reasonable ranges, though I know more than one old timer up here in AK that has used them quite sucessfully on moose. I also love how handy it is and it goes with me on trips quite often. |

Where you set zero depends on your normal hunting terrain. It will also depend to some extent on which 94 you have. I generaly find the standard 94 great out to around 200 yards but the SC, with the shorter sighting radius limited to about 150 yards. With a scope there might not be that much difference. I suggest you determine what your normal max range might be and then sight it in 50 yards short of max. |

i have several winchesters of various calibers and hunt with all of them. i hunt thick timber so we just sight in for 40-50 yards. but we shoot occassionally at longer ranges to verify where point of aim should be. its a great gun...and phenomenal killer 150 gr winchester silvertips will never let you down. your good to 150 yards solid. people who are magnumized...never give this cartridge the credit it deserves. |

ARFCOM is a great place to discuss AR and other semi auto rifles, but not the best forum for lever gun questions. IMHO, the best place to drop by for levergun action is Leverguns.com Leverguns.com is an very friendly place with a wide range of guests, from newbies to old hands. What benefits you the most on leverguns though is the old hands like Paco Kelly and Jim Taylor that have spent more time with leverguns in their hands then some of us have been alive! Check out the Articles section for a list of writings about leverguns that will boggle your mind. Finally, I have to quote the banner on the leverguns site because, they say it best: Can you trust a man that calls himself a rifleman but does not own at least one levergun? |
| More deer have been taken with a .30-30 than any other cartridge. My personal favorite is .45-70 as an overall cartridge, though. And, I wish someone (Hey, MARLIN!!!!, you listening?) would come out with a lever in .500 S&W, so I can go buy a large revolver. I'm waiting for that .500 because it's the one I want. mOtherwise I'll just have to get a .454 Riger and a Puma lever (Hey, MArlin, a nice brushed stainless, like the .45-70's) |
