im looking to buy a mini 14. should i buy it used or new?

I suggest you consider other alternatives unless you get the Mini at a very, very good price.
While reliable, Minis are not renowned for their accuracy (unless tweaked), and good mags are neither common not inexpensive.

As many people complain about them you'd think there'd be gobs of used Mini-14's and cheap also.

I got a ranch rifle and never had any problems taking the heads of rabbits or grouse ar any kind of varmint. I don't know what everyone's complaining about, they're not meant to be a bench rest gun and aren't really a combat arm either, but they'll serve you well if you want a plinker/woods gun, and in a pinch as a SHTF gun you could do worse than a mini, a lot worse.

Mine has been very reliable and accurate enough to take out coyotes on the run. if you sit at the bench with it, you will be fairly frustrated if you are looking for small groups. I would not give mine up. I laugh at the threads slamming the mini. IF you are looking for a super accurate bench gun..then pass. If you are looking for a versatile work rifle around the lease/ranch/property...then grab one and enjoy. MAG PRICES DO SUCK...and it is hard to find reliable ones, which is the only drawback I can find. I just use the factory provided mag.

So what good is a rifle without affordable and reliable magazines?

The factory supplied low cap magazine is quite reliable. I dont have to have a 20 or 30 round mag hanging underneath EVERY gun I own although it is more fun. Im telling ya, coyotes fear me and my mini and its low cap factory mag.

I've never had any problem finding good mags.  You can't be totally clueless about it though.<G>

Used is the most economical way to go.

I have two I paid 200 for one and $350 for the other.  The more expensive one was purchased during the ban.  I think the most I would pay would be $350 today  I think if you took your time you could probably pick one up for $300.

my ranch mini 14 was my first rifle. i love the thing, it has gone bang everytime. it would be an awsome plinker, or varmit gun. when i get old enough it will be my trunk gun. the low cap mags are good, never had a problem with those either.

ETA: go new

Cute.

I've owned both the Mini-14 and the Mini-30.  I can shoot sub-MOA.
They are not very accurate rifles, especially the Mini-30.  Are they accurate enough?  If you can live with 3" - 7" groups at 100 yards then get one.

Oddly, the most accurate Mini-14 I have shot is a buddy's old 80s vintage one.  With Q3131A I was able to get it in to 2.75" at 100 yards.  It's missing the rear sight retaining clip.  He's got a chuck of plastic toothpick in it.

I suggest a used stainless ranch rifle with aftermarket rings and a red dot sight.

Go used.  There isn't much to go wrong with them unless they have been abused.  The idea of an all stainless rifle got to me in the early 90s and I got a very used one for 250.  Never had any problems with it and it shot 3 inches at 100 with open sights in good light.  Great walk around gun.  I wish I hadn't sold it  but I got over $400 for it durring the ban

Looking for great groups then pass up this item.

Looking for a plinking rifle, these are great. With time you can find some good deals.

I don't like the Ranch model due to the flimsy rear sights, but do like it for the scope mounts.

Try to get a LEO GB model.

I got one a few years ago Stainless, Factory Folder and Government Barrel.

Or as they say at the gunstore I got it at, The A-Team Special.

I like mini-14's.  Sure they're louder than ar's, and they are a paint o get the botl release right.

But, they do look nice and the wood stock is nice.

I like my ar's a lot more, but my brother's mini-14 is nice.

I had a Mini-14 that I got rid of for accuracy reasons.  Any decent AR15 will outshoot a stock Mini.  If the price is right on a used one somewhere, I might replace it someday when I can afford both.
They are as reliable as any auto loader rifle if you're using a good mag.
Good hi cap mags should gradually become more available no that the ban is dead.

I have a Ranch rifle that I'll never part with. I know there are lots of folks here that hate them, I myself have always liked them. I also have 2 AR's, I also will never part with. If you like the the mini, go for it. Don't let others opinions make "your" decision.
