Much flatter trajectory than the 45/70, recoil may or may not be more, depends on the load (as always). Ditto for grouping, varies with the shooter & rifle.

What are you going to use it for, elk?

May be a tad strong for deer but should be just right for bear. You can always download it a bit for deer though.

Yes, it will.    Seems like Marlin makes a ported barrel version?

Recoil is noticable but not unmanageable, no pain, imo.  2.5 inches at 100.   Flattens whitetails but Remington factory 240 gr load is worthless.   You would HAVE to reload for Black bear.  I have shed jackets on the first shoulder on small whitetails.   240 grain pistol bullet was not meant for those velocities.   Porting is not needed whatsoever.   Marlin is just trying to sell guns.  I have owned and hunted with one since I was 13, about 25 years,  and I love it!!!!  Just gotta reload or Shoot Hornady ammo.   I killed my first Moose, Elk,  Black Bear and about 10 or 12 Whitetails.   Marlin 444S is da bomb!!!

I have a Marlin 444SS w/ a Simmons 44 Mag scope in 2x7, and it absolutely hammers whitetails! You have to handload for it but I got a this load out of Handloader magazine, and its accurate (1.5 in. @100 yds) and penatrates well. Recoil isn't to bad along the lines of a Hot loaded 7 mag.

I had one of the ported versions, sold it because of the ports.  Excellent brush/woods gun, one of my buddies bought it and has taken several deer with it.  I'd agree with the above posts on handloading for them.  FWIW, I replaced it with a Winchester 94 XTR in .375 Win., kills deer just as dead and it's a bit lighter to carry.
