Which one would you pick & why? I was looking at a PTR91-A1 vs Congo style DSA FAL or the like. Is one more reliable than the other, mag prices, etc? |
|
Both are great rifles. The DSA mags will be $5 to 15 bucks and about the same for the G3 some are out there for 2 dollars. I would say both are very reliable...I do not own a PTR-91 but I have a HK91 and a DSA congo. The DSA is gas which is nice, and it is not as heavy as the G3. The DSA is a little more then the PTR-91 if that is a factor. I like my HK91 over my DSA but that is after a few spendy add ons. But if you are talking which is better right out of the box PTR-91 vs. DSA I would have to go with the DSA FAL. Chris |

Check out most overatted and underratted rifles of all times. G3 (HKs) have a lot of votes fore being the most overated rifle ever, and FAL has a lot of votes for being the most under-rated ever. As a FAL owner, my vote goes to the FAL hands down. For the money you get a much higher quality firearm. |
|
Both are proven and realible combat rifles. FAL mags seems to be just a bit more pentiful. Have you handled the guns? Which feels best to you? Can you operate the weapons safety, mag release, op rod while still shouldered? What assoceries do you plan on adding? My .02 cents is for the FAL for it fits my needs. CD |

I have lots of experience with HK & CETME, none with FAL. HK has my vote for most over-rated. I will never own another one. If possible, try shooting HK and FAL before buying, then you'll know what works best for you in terms of sights, balance, ergonomics, etc. My next .308 will be either a M1A or FAL. I haven't made the decision yet. horse.gif |
| The FAL is slightly more ergonomic, but the 91/G3 has much better sights, is readily scoped or dot sighted with its claw mount, and is more accurate. The FAL's sights suck and the FAL's I've owned, were never great shooters and a couple were real turds. My HK 91's were on the level of the M1A's I've owned as far as accuracy goes. The flutes are a non issue to reloaders but you really do need the port buffer if you want to reload. |
That's what I'm a bit concerned about; I'm spoiled with M1A sights already. Does the DSA Para or OSW have improved sights over a base FAL? Recommendations on improved/replacement sights for FAL? Thanks for the feedback everyone; I was leaning towards a G3. Didn't realize the overwhelming bias towards the FAL... |
+2 Never cared for the HK G3. Same as Lumpy, I hated the ergonomics, and the recoil seemed lighter on the FAL. |
| Everything I've heard says generic G-3s have horrible triggers (worse than most semi-auto battle rifles). I am looking in the market to go for a "real" semi-auto .308 (I've got a MAS 49/56, but that doesn't really count) and everything I've ever read says FALS are better in the long run. Again, it's what you like, but here's my opinion. |

I have both. I like the G3, but it is not as easy a shoot as the FAL. They have similar accuracy. The FAL ergonomics suit me (YMMV) better. Both have high maintainability rates: they're good-to-go most all the time. Recoil of a properly-tuned FAL is negligible compared to the G3. I like my G3. I carried my FAL for serious, across-the-pond, business. The proponent agnecy had both the FAL and the G3 available. Nuff said. |
|
I've never seen or fired a FAL, Excuse the ignorance and I'm always willing to listen and learn new weapons. WHO makes the FAL? manufacture, contact, caliber? Links would be appreciated. Thanks to all! I do have a couple of PTR's and have always loved them and their simplicity of breakdown and repair and the ability to quickly make modifications. Scope mount sucks, Kickback will make you sore for a day or two. Reliability is excellent, Accuracy is excellent, NO gas feedback to "Shit where it eats". All together just a great design and price obviously can't be beat! |

Fal's were originally made by FN. Now their clone are made by just about everyone. DSA is arguably the best in this country. Caliber is also 308. check out: falfiles.com/forums |
