I’m looking for a backpacking gun. I’m thinking something in .44 mag. I was looking at the S&W 629. They have it in a 4” or 3” inch. I would prefer the 3” just because it is a little easier to carry, but what kind of ballistics do you get from the 3” vs. the 4”? Is this a concern? Any input would be great. Thanks in advance.

You might want to check out the S&W 629 Mountain Gun with the lightweight barrel, this revolver is all stainless. If you’d like something even lighter check out the S&W 329PD they both have a 4-inch barrel and the 329PD only weighs 26.5 ounces. If you’re in bear country you really want to think about carrying the revolver in a horizontal shoulder holster.

What critters are you concerned about?  I bought a Ruger .44 Redhawk for the same reasons, and kind of wish I had bought a .357 as there are no grizzly hereabouts.

Well for now it would be for whatever critters CO could throw at me, but i'm also thinking about some sites in MT.

Ihe mountain gun is a good Recommendation.  If you are in need of packing a pistol which may save your life, pack one that will. Even if confronted with a bad dog I would want one shot to absolutely stop the threat.
Ruger offers their Redhawk in 45 colt which will handle 'hunting' loads, another option.
Whatever you decide upon, Practice with it a bit.
