What's the lowdown on this round.

IIRC it is a .22 LR necked down to a .17.

Not a .22 mag necked down

I hear it's similar to .17 WMR but with .22lr case.

It is a 22 hornet necked down to a .17 cal and is a very potent varmit round.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!   You're ALLL WRONG!

Sorry but there was like 3 different answers and they're all wrong.

It's a Stinger length case necked down to .17

A Stinger is the same OAL as a .22 LR, but with a shorter bullet and longer case.  Hence, Ruger should come out with a 10/17 in the new .17 Mach 2, as it would fit the action fine.  So Stoney-Point was the closest.

The other popular new .17 is the .17 Hornady Rimfire Magnum.

My question is what is the advantage of 5.7x28mm FN over the 17 rounds, lol.

Ruger is supposed to be coming out with its little pistol in it too.  What's that thing called, the MkII?

The MkIII. Yeah eventually it's supposed to be chambered for it. I just handled that little gun the other day (in .22 LR) and I gotta say it was a piece of CRAP!

Very cheap plasticky look and feel of the grip; the magazine had no interest in dropping free; and the loaded chamber indicater sticks out of the side of the receiver, leading me to ask how long it takes before it breaks off in a holster.
I guess the barrel was nice though.
