I was thinking about purchasing a Steyr Aug but wanted to know if anyone had any insight about what to look for in buying the weapon. I would like to obtain the 16' barreled black Aug, I know there are a lot of people cutting the barrels down on the 20" green Aug and dying them black to try to get more money for the weapon. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, including possible prices lowest to high?hug.gif

A black 16" A2 is going to cost you some bucks. $3500+++ I just picked up a USR two weeks  ago, $2100 and should be getting it tomorrow.  USR have all the updates and are $1000-2000 cheaper.  Also theres not to many of them in the US, only 3000.

USR's would look better with some kind of muzzle brake (post ban) on them.

Totally agree with the above statement, also some people have been known to modify a USR to look like a AUG, but thats if you have the $$$.

There are less USR's in country than AUG's.

That being said...the AUG has some things the USR does not. Quick-change barrels, mainly; not to mention the flash supressor and bayonet lug you can put on it. That's about it.

The USR CAN be modified, as I recall, to accept quick-detach barrels. Doing so may put you at risk with the ATF though; I am not clear on that ruling.

Even if you could...you can't. All the normal AUG barrels are threaded and have a flash supressor on them. You'd have to chop it, which would...well, ruin a perfectly good (and expensive!) AUG barrel.

The nice thing about the USR is that you can swap optics easily; you can't do that on a normal AUG. It also accepts normal AUG magazines, as expensive as they are.

So..you're kind of stuck in a weird ground. You gain and lose by getting a USR; same with an AUG.

A factory "police" AUG, black, will cost you a premium as very few were imported. The 16" barrel assembly differs from a 20"; the details can be found on the net. If you know what to look for, you can spot a 16" original barrel, and a 20" cut down to 16". Not to mention an original barrel should match the receiver serial number; it's stamped on both. Another easy way will be to check if the "police" AUG has the upgrades done to it; a bolt carrier roller and closed-cage flash hider are the quick giveaways.

Why's the USR so cheap? *shrug*...got me. I'm considering picking one up, just because.

As far as installing the mod to allow the USR to use quick change barrles it's not a 'evil feature' listed in the AWB so there are no worries there, it's just if you are using AUG barrels you run into the issue of a post-ban rifle with a flash hider, after the ban that shouldn't even be an issue....

wait, I take that back because the USR was imported it will still be subject to 922r thus it would still be subject to the evil features rule...I think....soo many layers of bullshit it's hard to keep straight.

In any event I have a Green AUG with all the updates and love it. I would highly recomend the 24" heavy barrle as well, that's what I find myself shooting the most, definetly get the best grouping from it compared to the 16" and 20".

Well, the point was...even if you do the mod to make it accept AUG quick-change barrels...it's a completly pointless manuver because you can't put an AUG barrel on it, anyway Between the flash supressor and threaded muzzle, it's a non-starter...and I'm not sure where the barrel threads sit with the ATF, either. (I mean the threading that runs the length of the barrel; not just at the muzzle for the flash supressor)

And yes, it would still be subject to 922(r). I'm not sure if replacing the appropriate parts would get around that in September.

Well having a AUG quick change barrel release is not a pointles manuver. Because you have to strip out the barrel to clean the rifle. I have two green 20" AUGs and I am toying with getting a USR, so I can use different optics. And if I bought a USR the first thing I would do is put on a AUG barrel release button.

Check out fjvollmer.com or PJ Investments for a good deal on a AUG or a USR

If for some reason you choose not to buy a AUG - but still feel the need - you could buy a Ruger 10/22 and then a AUG style stock from Ironwood Designs. It's definately not the same as the real deal, but it's still fun.

Thats about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of a USR
