Is there any particular reason that Thompsons aren't more popular than they are?  When I go to gun shows I see AR15s, SKSs, AKs, 1911s, etc all over the place, but I rarely see any Thompsons.  How come?

You mean the semi-auto ones ?

" People either love them or hate them !" People who love them don't sell them and people who hate them don't have one to sell

I don't have a "Thompson" because I can't afford a genuine Thompson sub-gun.  Also, I have no need for a 9+lb. semi-auto pistol cal. carbine.

For a long time there was only one mfgr who made a semi version & it was less than high quality. Volunteer Arms in Knoxville, IIRC.

Now Thompson/Auto Ordnance is making them but I've never seen one.

I`m 223spree and I`m a S/A Thompson lover. If you run 230 grain BALL ammo thru them with decent mags the S/A Thompsons run great. And yes its true I have it cause I can`t afford, and can`t get a sign off in my current location on a F/A Thompson. But I can`t imagine an American gunsafe without some form of a S/A or F/A Tommygun!

The Auto Ordnance Thompsons are well made, but at 11+ lbs and 38" overall, they are rather unwieldy.

When it comes to full auto I generally snub my nose at it because I find it a deplorable waste of ammunition..............but then there is the Tommy Gun......once you've fired a real Thompson....there's just no turning back.  There really should be a support group for those of us who can not afford one...but desperately need one.

....maybe the government needs to just gimme one...I am feeling more and more like a charity case every minute...............

FA Thompsons are the $hit but .... sigh no FA fun in WA  I like my Semi Khar M1, even though it's heavy and awkward and not FA it's still a hoot to shoot and having 8k rds of 45 helps !

i've seen them at gunshows.  both semi and FA.  the semis were over $700.  i'm not even going to say how much the FAs were.

The Thompson was designed in 1927 or thereabouts. There more modern designs such as the 45ACP Uzi. With a loaded 25rd stick mag is was really heavy. Thompson's are impressive when someone like Vic Morrow is firing it in the TV series combat, but for my money I would rather have a CAR15. I was ready to buy one of those things before Kahr took over Auto-Ord, but changed my mind after feeling how heavy it was. It weghed as much as a loaded AR with 20" BBL & 30 rd mag.
