So does anyone know how well this thing works, along with the effectiveness of it's ammo?  It looks like fun to shoot at the very least .

I have one of the cartridges, given to me by a friend who is pretty high up in the HK hierarchy.  He says everyone will say that it doesn't have enough stopping power, but they are comparing it to full size submachineguns or rifles.  Compared to most pistols it has plenty of stopping power, plus AP capability.  The way HK looks at it, you can carry a SOCOM with 12 rounds of .45acp if that's your choice, or you can carry this thing, controllable full auto with 30 rounds of armor piercing ammo, at basically no weight penalty and just a bit of a size penalty.  They are sending a bunch of them to Iraq for urban CQB work because HK is very interested in seeing what happens when live humans are actually shot with the cartridge.  That's the real test, all the ballistic gelatin testing they've done won't matter a whit if some guy takes 10 rounds in the chest and keeps coming at our guys anyway.

Here are a couple of vids of an HK rep having a turn behind the gun.  Just right click, save as... you know the drill.

And here's a bonus vid for you, of the new HK Squad Automatic Weapon, the MG43.  Supposedly a very reliable performer and recently adopted by the Bundeswehr (who don't suck in the equipment department).

Actually, here's the entire webpage containing these videos.  Hope you're on broadband!

Thanks for the cool vids Duke!

Any word on how the 4.6 did in ballistic gel though?  I'd imagine it would tumble or fragment or something.

"The MP7A1 is the final production model and will be available for sale in the U.S. very soon."  From HK-USA

So can I get one?

Apparently, it's this thing vs. the P90 in terms of PDWs. HK claims that the round fragments, which, if true, it beats the P90 hands down(but I would still rather have a P90, those thingies are super neat!).

Well according to my friend it does very well in ballistic gel AFTER penetrating armor.  Probaby meaning fragmentation.  He says that without armor it my just zip straight through.  He suggests that the operators who choose these weapons will probably dump multiple rounds into the head of any "tango" anyway (with the weapon on burst or auto), making stopping power less of an issue.  He also points out that 5 perfectly aimed shots of any caliber, even .22 short, are better than 3 .45acps that missed because your UMP .45 recoils too much and has too slow a rate of fire (he doesn't care much for the UMP series at all, still prefers the Mp5).  Remember, 100 yards is pushing the maximum effective range of this gun, its really supposed to be a bigass pistol more than a really tiny assault weapon.  Its supposed to be the ultimate gun for a gunfight in a cave, a living room, or a stairwell.

Visited the HK factory here in Germany about a year ago and fired one. Very easy to shoot. The factory rep said the ammo had preformed allot better then the P90 ammo in Gov't tests.. Basically that it fragments upon impact.

A couple of years ago, I had a chance to fire the MP7 at Camp Robinson during the firepower demo of the NDIA Small Arms Symposium. Jim Schatz bought along a limited amount of ammo, so each firer only got 20 rounds. It was definitely fun to shoot.

Pretty much a split between the P90 and the MP7 in its ammo proformance.  lots of test done on the MP7 against the older P90 round. the newer P90 round has much better performance and it is head and shoulder to the MP7.  Both guns are design for the rear support, air, tank crews with limited capabilites for the Spec op teams.  with either round in auto mode, it would like getting shot by multiple rounds of 22 mag, I would not want to be stitched by a couple of those things.  one shot might not be impressive against a regular rifle, but the P90/MP7 is very controllable in FA and you can easily put a group of four to five rounds on target at the close distance it was design to be used.

From the folks I've talked to who've fired the P90, you're underrating it on controllability. The couple cops I've met who've fired it said you can put all 50 rounds on target

Underrate no, five shots in a tight group on command vs. 50 rounds on target is kind of different. you can put 30 rounds 9mm on target with the MP5.

The equally funny thing is that you would likely need all 50 of those little rounds on the target to get the intended results.  Who wants .22 magnum ballistics anyway.
