This ought to be good for some snide comments. But, I have a friend who is getting rid of an AK and wants something in a semi that he can legally shoot in California. He would prefer a .308 or some other similar caliber, but can only spend about $500. Any ideas?

Thanks

For $500, or less, a fixed mag SKS.

Tell him to get one of them fancy, super duper, battery operated, semi-auto water guns, without any evil features(protruding pistol grip, spray hider)

Then He can kill 2 birds with 1 stone. He will have his Kommunist legal weapon, AND he can go help fight wildfires.

Springfield Armory M1A.

Oops strike that, M1As are more $1,000, how about a Ruger Mini-14?

Seriously, if he can't save up more than that get an SKS and a case of ammo and have a good time. If he can wait a bit to save a couple hundred dollars, try to find a Garand.  M1a would probably be best, but will also cost the most.

And there's outfits that will restore a Garand and rebarrel it for 308 too.  The total will come up being a bit more than $500, but not as bad as an M1A.

EDIT:  Orion 7is one of the companies that I was thinking of that of that offers 308 rebarreling, and I've heard their name mentioned favorable in Garand circles before.

Saigas are banned by name.
and the only Vepr that doesn't have a pistol grip/thumbhole doesn't seem to be imported.
I could be wrong about the Vepr tho..
