This has been bugging me for a long time, and I'm sure you guys will explain it in a way I can understand

As I understand it, the thicker barrel allows for a stiffer barrel. With less "whip" as the bullet travels down the barrel, it's a bit more stable.
And if you don't like this version, I'll give you another one.

It's not necessarily that a heavier barrel is more accurate, it's more consistent. Things like heat and barrel whip will play less of a role with a heavier barrel. The other reason a heavier barrel is preferred is because you get a more stable shooting platform.

Remember, though, that a thin barrel made from a high-quality barrel blank can easily outshoot a heavy barrel made from a mediocre barrel blank. It only really helps to add barrel thickness when you have addressed all of the other things (barrel quality, chambering dimensions, bolt fit, free-floating, good ammo, etc.) first. Otherwise, your rifle is just heavy.
