As I understand it, the thicker barrel allows for a stiffer barrel. With less "whip" as the bullet travels down the barrel, it's a bit more stable.

And if you don't like this version, I'll give you another one.

It's not necessarily that a heavier barrel is more accurate, it's more consistent.  Things like heat and barrel whip will play less of a role with a heavier barrel.  The other reason a heavier barrel is preferred is because you get a more stable shooting platform.
