I was thinking of buying a mini-30 to beat on and because I don't have a 7.62x39 yet, however I have heard lots of nasty rumors of the Mini-30 not liking wolf ammo...are these compatible?  I have a Mini-14 and have never shot wolf in it before and don't wanna start now, but if i get the mini-30 it will be the exception provided it cycles

What's the point, man?
What's the point?

Buy a mini-30 to beat on with Wolf ammo?

I just don't get it. . . :)

You need an SKS, which is a better weapon than a Mini-30 (quality mags are nearly impossible to find for them), and works great with cheap Wolf ammo.

I had an AK for awhile. I beat on it too. Then, it got old.

Get an AK/SAR-1. Shoot wolfe all day. Hose it out when you get home.

If I recall correctly, the mini-30 has a long tapered throat in the barrel, to bring the bullets down to.308 dia, (most 7.62x39 bullets are .309-.311) this is not good for accuracy,I also remember reading in Gun test mag, where they tested the mini-30 against a SKS, and a AK-47, both the SKS and the AK outshot the mini30, badly, instead of spending the money for a mini-30, I'd look at a AK, or an SKS, SKS's can be had for about $110.00 from AIM,(in excellent condition)and AK's can be had there as well for $250.00-280.00 I'm not sure, HI-cap mags for the AK can be found cheap, $10-15.00 each,Good luck finding a hi-cap mag for the mini-30 that actually works, if you want a beater, the AK or the SKS would be the way to go...the AK and SKS will shoot wolf ammo all day long, with no problems, as they were pretty much designed to shoot the stuff,I'm not a big fan of AK's or SKS's, but if I wanted something to go out and hammer on, I'd get a AK or SKS....

I am trying to find more info on the SKS now, rather than the mini-30, thanks for the opinions, I have shot one before, but still can't decide between the mini-30,  I would just buy an Ak, but since last summer they were banned, now this is no longer an option for me living in CT

From the a former owner:  good with domestic (read $$$) ammo, bad with anything else.  Good hi caps?  hehehehehe [>Q]  buy 3 sks for the price of one mini-30.  Better yet, spend what you were planning, but on a SAR 1, get the replacement gas tube with the weaver base on it, and you are still ahead with a scope mount to boot.

I think Ruger started making 30s with normal 7.62x39 barrels quite awhile ago. The throated down barrels were on early 30s. I would suggest an SAR-1 over a 30 any day. I sold my 30 recently, but for a blasting gun it was okay. The steel USA mags worked. CDNN sells them. (actually I have some USA and Eagle mags for mine that I am going to sell off at some point).

If you just want a gun so you can shoot 7.62x39 wolf cheaply then I think I'd lean toward an SKS over a mini. 30
