| I have a few boxes of .223 ammo marked Police Ammunition.Made by HSM in Missoula,MT.The box is bright orange in color(like a neon safety orange)and the 50 rnds are loose in the box.55grn FMJ.Basically,I'm just curious what the difference is between Police ammo and the regular stuff. As far as shotgun ammo,I do know that the police tactical round is a lower felt recoil for faster acquisitions. What is different in the .223?Just a top-of-the-line, match grade, high end round as opposed to say,NATO stuff?or am I way off base? |

I don't know about that brand, but all the 223/5.56 ammunition I have seen used for Law Enforcement is the same as any ammo anyone else could buy. That doesn't mean there is not any out there for LE only, just that I haven't seen any. I think the reason arjohnson stated is the main reason for the boxes to be marked LE... No Taxes. |

If taxes hadn't been paid on it then ATF would be all over peoples asses trying to collect money. The LEO Only thing is marketing, nothing more. It makes the LEOs feel special and it keeps anti-gun groups from getting their panties in a bunch. For example, Winchester doesn't sell Black Talon anymore, but they've got some very good Ranger SXT ammo that is "LEO Only". Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge. And pulpsmack, the only way you could get into serious trouble for having LEO Only ammo is if you live in some place like NJ that bans hollowpoint ammo. That LEO Only is done voluntarily by the ammo company and there's no law anywhere that says you can't have it. Please verify your info before posting. There is an ammunition forum on this site, and I believe the LEO Only thing is addressed in that FAQ. |
