DSA makes a SAW for export to a foreign military that uses a heavy barrel.  The Type II receiver allows for the heavy barrel on that select fire weapon.  Practically there is no difference for us semi-auto shooters.

DeMarcus, Thanks for the info.I think I'll go with the type 2 receiver.BTW do you know any FFL's that stock them and the price I should pay? I thought they wre going for $795 but on the DSA site they listed at msrp$995

Thanks again Dan

I bought a DSA Stg58a w/Type II receiver from a local shop in Atlanta for $950 over a year ago.

Excellent weapon. There are cheaper companies, but most agree that DSA is the best.

I recently built a FAL from a Stg58 kit & DSA Type I receiver. Kit, receiver plus reqired USA parts cost $575. However, special tools drive it up more. If you want to know what it takes to build one, try bandit's site:

I e-mailed them extensively about this as I carried one in the BundesHeer for a short time.

In the end, they broke down and told me the difference was pure cosmetics.

I passed on the rifle as it was not the same as I had used (realizing current gun laws in this choice) The muzzle break being incorrect was the biggest turn off for me. Damn thing was like a Swiss army knife.

Doesn't seem like much of a difference. Especially since new rifles can't have flash suppressors.

'Dealer' cost on the rifle is $800 plus shipping.  (The carbine is $850 - also plus shipping.)

Demarcus, I know it is more of a personal thing as to why I didn't get it considering the laws regarding this and all.

There is a huge functional difference to me. I was never allowed to carry a knife of any sort (long story) so I made use of the flash suppessor quite often.

Hell, we had to use blue electrical tape to keep half of the bipods up as they were so worn out.

I am not knocking DSA as they produce a quality product within the law, I am just nostalgic for the weapon I carried.

obershutze916,

That's understandable. I’ve been planning to build an AR similar to the M16A1 that I carried in the service. I want it to have the small pivot pin & mag release protection fence. It’s also annoying that I have to use a muzzle break & cut off the bayonet lug if it’s a postban. I have no use for the bayonet lug, but the look is wrong.

Both the Type 1 and Type 2 are "correct" for the StG-58A, and both are beautifully made by DSA.

I prefer the look of the Type 2, but that's just a personal thing.

You really can't go wrong with one of these rifles, the quality is just like that of a pre-ban.

StG-58A has a Type 2, the SAR-48 Para has a Type 3.

Here's my DSA STG58A on a Type I receiver with a 18" barrel, short STG muzzle brake, and synthetic handguards:
