So what is the purpose of the flat top over the handguards?  I'm pretty sure it's not for little planes to land on.

Since the handguard is ventilated, and the rifle got's it a scope, I think it may be to cut down on mirage.

I could be wrong...

I probably am.

On the other hand though I WEALLY want a Sig 550, what do they go for and where?

Seems like mirage generated by barrel heat would not be a factor at the effective ranges of the .223.

That would incorrect, sir. Mirage can have an effect on ANY weapon at ANY range.

It is a mirage band, used to keep barrel heat from distorting your sight picture. It is mainly used in target shooting competitions(ie, Palma/Wimbeldon matches). It is usually made from elastic material. Some benchrest competitors will fashion one out of thin aluminum sheet.I had one on my PSS.It seemed to help on hot days when you had to shoot 20 round relays.
