I have a commander in 9mm. Could I just change the barrel and bushing to .45 or not?
The pistol is not marked 9mm on the frame or slide anywhere and my .45 mags fit no problem. The feed ramp looks different than my .45 tho.
Anybody know?

You can go 38 super. But to go 45 you will need a 45 slide

You'll need the .45 slide, ejector and possibly some work on your feed ramp

The ejector is different between .45 and 9mm/.38S on the Govt model, but on the Commander it's the same part.  You'd need a complete slide and a barrel.  Basically you need the top half of the gun.

I'm not a 1911-type 'smith, but I understand that there are 2 different bolt faces, small for 9mm/38Super/.40S&W/10mm and large for 45ACP, so therefore large and small calibers are not interchangeable on the same slide.

Years ago, I built a three caliber Combat Commander out of a gun that was originally .45.

You can use your 9mm slide for the .38 Super. Except for the markings on the side of the slide, they are identical; but you will need a .45 slide assy, barrel and bushing, and probably a recoil spring assy, and you may have to shorten the projecting arm on the 9mm ejector a bit (won't hurt 9mm ejection tho).

I loved my gun; was even going to shorten a 22/45 conversion unit for it when it was stolen, along w/several rifles.  The guns were recovered in Chicago, and I got all the rifles back; but somehow that Colt never made it. I guess some Chicago cop decided he needed it more than I did.

I checked Brownells and the plug, spring and guide are the same for all three calibers.
I think I just need to buy a slide assy. a barrel and a bushing. All Colt parts thru Brownells will run about three bills.
Thanks for the help guys. Now who can help with the cash?

Uh Uh. Except for possibly having to shorten the little arm on the front of the 9mm ejector, he can use what's in there.  In fact, with the thicker ejector face, he'll probably get more positive ejection I did on my conversion. Of course I had to get the new ejector, 'cause I started w/a .45.

It'd probably be easier to simply sell the 9mm and buy a .45 though.

If you find the right guy, the 9mm could be worth decent money.
