Hey

I got a question about machine guns....
How does a machine gun works?
are there websites where it is explained?
are there website where there are cross-sections of machine guns?
How does the gas-system works?
Could anybody help me?

thank you in advance

The only thing I can think of would be to do a search for either "machine gun" or "infantry weapons".

As an example of how a gas system works: In the AK series of weapon, there is a port in the barrel which diverts gas to a piston, which is attached to the bolt carrier. When the gas drives the piston/bolt carrier to the rear, at the same time a slot in it acts with a cam on the bolt to rotate and unlock the bolt. This allows the whole thing to move to the rear and eject the spent case, and cocks the hammer at the same time. When it reaches the end of its' travel, the recoil spring drives it forward, reversing the above process, but along the way, it will pick up a fresh cartridge from the magazine and chamber it.

This is an overly simplified explanation, but I hope it helps a little.

I hope somebody comes along behind me to better explain.........

Do you understand how your Semi-Auto works?

Dude, the only way to get more detailed is to go into the design of a particular gun.

That link Skammy provided was excellent. It should be the basis of a required reading curriculum for journalists.

A semiautob is 98% of what a select fire gun is. If you're familiar with the AR family search this site for the Training Manual which explains how the action works.

Adam is right, you'll have to be specific about what kind of gun you want to learn about. Gas operated? Recoil operated? Short-stroke piston? Long stroke? Direct gas system? Belt fed? Rotating barrels? Magazine fed? Machine guns, automatic rifles, or submachine guns? The underlaying principle is basically the same, but there are quite a few differences between them. It's better to know what to look for, searching will be a whole lot easier. For a "generic" explanation, the link Skammy provided is excellent...

A machine gun works by having a few extra parts inside of the gun that allows you to not get finger cramps.

Usually, there is a mechanical sear of some sort that that is tripped by the bolt just as it puts the cartridge into the chamber. This sear then actuates upon the trigger group in such a way that it causes the hammer to strike (and fire the gun) without you having to pull the trigger again.

In theory, a full auto (machine gun) can always be converted from a semi-auto one.

For AR, the only trick here is to add a device (sear) to control the hammper to hit the firing pin while your trigger is still pulled.

All the extra parts you need serve only for this purpose.

PC-Tech- I was thinking of posting those links, pretty good movies if you have the bandwidth.

That howstuffworks site a few posts above has some excellent Flash media animations of how blowback, gas, and beltfed works, worth checking out.
