First I want to say What A great time in ALBANY. If anyone gets out that way you have to make B&J guns a place to visit. Now my new toy and I know I am going to hear about this from some of you. I actually went there looking for an AR10 upper, but there were none. I got an H&K SL8-1, but I got it with the mag conversion. So it takes AR15 mags and most of all the C-MAG. Nothing to write home about on looks. Either you like it or you don't. Also you need to except Grey which I happen to like on it. The important feature is how it functions. I must say WOW. Like I told GI_BRAT. There is almost NO RECOIL at all. Once you take the slack up in the trigger it feels like a machine gun going off. I did shoot it today and it was very accurate once I got the windage set. I need to try it past 50 yds before I really let you know about it. From what I can tell it should be very accurate. I will get some pictures with the Bipod and also I mounted my EOtec 552 on it. |
d I've seen them way overpriced at Blue Ridge Arsenal. The least expensive Bad Black(or grey) Rifle out there an AR180b at about 1/3 the price of that h&k. But I like it!!! |
$1896.00 with tax and the AR15 mag conversion. I tried it and the thing that struck me right off was the No recoil and how clean it stayed. I got done talking to a friend who is really up on HK's and have them like we have AR's. 7000 rounds before you need to do a detail cleaning and that is also what HK says. All you should do is clean the barrel after each shooting. They say run a patch and coated rod through the barrel end after a day of shooting. I still did the AR15 break in procedure and cleaned from the chamber any way. The only problem I am having is a FTF every once and a while. I hope it has nothing to do with the conversion. The mags seem to be looser than they should. The C-mag fits but it really needs a longer tower. The cans are right against the Mag well. Also it hits the mag release and it is hard to reach the button to release it. Other than that like I said it is sweet shooting I need to really test it past a 50yd to see it's full potential. The other good thing the wife. For some reason she said it looks better than the AR and not has dangerous looking....LOL...I cracked up because she was the 4th person that said that so far. Them AR's are just so dam intimidating. |
Yea I know that skeleton stock sucked. Also that is why I didn't get the 45 cal HK rifle. If they could put the SL8-1 Stock on it I might have thought about it. I only hope I don't have trouble with the conversion. My friend has HK 30 round mags I could use....He is a LEO and has the real things. I like the creepy looking SAR-1. I was going to get one of those. BARRETT semi keeps calling me or even their bolt action one. Armalite is just to busy making military rifles to deal with private citizens right now. I hate to get an AR50 and not be able to get parts for it. You know what I mean..... |
Went and shot the C-Mag today not rapid but fast enough. No problems with the C-Mag, but I am having lots of problems with regular Mags and I tried all of them from 10-30 rounders. I am getting Failure to feed. The mags are really lose fitting in the mag well. I am going to call J&B tomorrow and see what to do about it. I think the conversion is made by Special weapons. I hope they didn't shave to much out of the Mag well in the receiver. I also hope it is covered under H&K warranty incase there is something wrong. The C-Mag fits real tight so that's why I feel it is the conversion being the problem. Other than that it works like a charm and there is nothing to clean after your done. Just clean the barrel and keep on shooting. The site system has much to be desired AR's have it up on that with open sites. So I will let you know what is going on. |
Tim, Don't let these two hog all the attention...I bought a new toy too, an AR in .50 Beowolf....let's ALL go to CALVERTON and annoy the "(st)Rangemaster"....
HellDog...Didn't you also buy the HK SL8 without the conversion? Also the Beowolf now that was a good deal. If I knew that was there I would have picked it up before your eyes even spotted it. We need to go to the Barons and do a real Gun Test. I have mine sighted in at 50 yds with the puny plastic sight and also my Eotec and Tasco Scope. Like I said my problem is the FTF problem and if it tries the round going into the chamber is all mangled up. I have been trying to find info about it but HKPro.com don't have any and some of the others also. I know he said it was Life time Warranty, but I would just like to make sure and who is responsible if it needs fixing. The way my luck is going I might have to send it in and not see this one for a while like the other one that is still waiting for parts. Plus my Reloading table just cracked and I got lucky. Was at the end so didn't lose to much powder or primers. Didn't help my back at all. I just wish something would go my way without having to climb walls and jump through hoops for things I buy and have worked on....Later |
| Does the Special Weapons convert cut into the frame of the rifle at all?? If it does, then you no longer have a warranty from H&K. If it's just some lower replacement part then.. if you want H&K to work on it, you'd have to return it to the condition before the conversion. H&K will have nothing to do with weapons being converted/cut/etc. And we all know what sort of rep "Special Weapons" has.. it's far from being good. Hope it all works out for you nonetheless. I also have an sl8-1, and the idea of having over 10 round mags for it is appealing. I just don't want to be a guinea pig beta testing SW's conversion.. :) |
Well, for a guy who a few months ago was recovering from 9/11 injuries and fighting the FDNY compensation wolves you sure are living it up now! What ever happened? I never found out how it ended. Nice rifle. I like the dining room table more than the rifle actually. Doggonit |
Well the table my parents bought me actually they decorated half my house for me. I sold my Ar15 A3 to help pay for it. Also I did get my 3/4 pension. Now for the bad news...The rifle stopped working altogether. The firing pin stopped hitting the primer. So now it doesn't even fire. Then when you pull the charging handle back sometimes it doesn't eject the round. Worse of all HK does not warranty it once the conversion was done. I asked if they did before I bought it and was told yes. I am sure I will be taken care of by the guys at J&B. At this point I would rather have the one without the conversion. I just spoke to a guy at Mitchell field who had one. He had more trouble than it was worth. He finally gave it back or sold it from where he bought it. Started having problems 12 days after he had it. Anyone want to take a ride to Albany next week with me? |
Aaaaaaahhh! That sucks! Lesson learned: Hate, mistrust, and wish death and doom upon anything made by SW! Doggonit (Who wanted to get an SW MP5 copy at one time...... he must have been smoking something) P.S.: Nice to hear that you got the 3/4 pension. What are you going to do now? Any career plans? How about becoming a gunsmith? One of those at home gunsmith types? |
The mag conversion may have voided the H&K warranty, but B&J will still send it out to one of our gunsmiths for repair - who is an H&K certified gunsmith. We offered to pay for Marc to ship it back to us to have it looked at, however he is more than welcome to drive up to visit us again... This time maybe I can take him to the range. Wish I was personally able to snap my fingers and make this better for him, sadly I'm just a liaison for Brian and Jim here. However, they are stand-up folks and I have confidence in them. |
That's right I was called Monday and told to ship it back no cost to me. I also can not say it was Special Weapons who built it. I say that because they are the ones I hear and see all the time. So I do not want to tarnish someone's business. I am sure it will be taken care of and I do not want ANYONE saying negative things about any one PLEASE. I sent a message saying I am willing to drive up there since it stopped working altogether. This way I could bring my own mags and we could figure this problem out together. Still anyone want to take a ride Friday. I hate to drive my F250 all that way. I would pay for tolls and gas if someone wanted to drive their car. Something that gets good gas mileage |
Friday I might be able to swing by the shop around lunch, but I do have to work at my government job tomorrow. Saturday and Sunday my schedule is wide open. While Special Weapons does a lot of these conversions, we had this one done by Ron Losie. If I'm not mistaken his shop is in Oneonta, NY. Top notch gunsmith. We;ve sold several, this is the first with reported problems. One of the guys in our shop owns one and he said it can be ammo and mag finicky... but Black Hills always works and so do GI mags for him. We will figure this out. |
I've just completed my SL8-1 conversion myself. Decided to go "K" with it. I've made my own cocking handle, and have a G36 magwell, so it is also legal for me to use G36 mags (either 10 rounders or the rare "prototype" 30 rounders out there) in my rifle, if I choose. Mine shoots 100%, but I chose to do the conversion myself. I've never trusted anyone else to work on my rifles and I go to great lengths to insure everything is done correctly. The most common reason failures exits is that NOT ENOUGH material is removed from the receiver, deflecting the mag from being positioned correctly. The mag well holds the mag in proper postion.. it should NOT engage the side walls of the receiver. In addition the tension on the bolt hold open is significantly greater than that of an AR. Stiffer springs are sometimes required in the mag to force the BHO to engage. I simply increased the tolerance in the gripframe for the BHO to move more freely. Not a failure yet with GI or Thermold mags. Another common isssue is the installer neglecting to install the compression rings in the new piston. This makes the gun short cycle causing MANY problems. Once any existing issues are resolved (just like ANY gun), the weapon should function 100%. If anyone is interested, here are a few pics I took today: For more info, please visit MY WEBSITE!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is a comparison of an actual G36K, SL8-1 with SW Stock Kit, then my "chopped stock" K Clone:

KeithBuckner...Very nice...I really wish this one worked right. The FTF I am worried about but felt that could be fixed. When it stopped firing altogether and the rounds were not ejecting manually. I started to worried. After all it's only a week old. The Gas rings are there and all looks right. Then when I met this guy and he told me about his, and HK said it isn't under their warranty. Like I said I am sure things will be solved and again I WILL not put down Special Weapons if they did it. I have spoken to some people from HKpro.com and a couple of other sites. Its like a 60% disliked the conversion and 40% say it's ok. You also have to realize not to many people own HK's in the SL8-1. Most HK people look down on this political correct rifle. Plastic, Grey and only will take 10 rounder. HiRam it will be Sat. I didn't mean Friday that was a typo. Again thanks to you guys calling me Monday and wanting to solve the problem. |
Well after taking the rifle apart into it's main components I find Gas system all in order. Rings attached and staggered. Rod and piston move free and there is no obstructions. Took the stock off and everything is in the trigger group. It all works no major wear or broken springs. I took the Bolt assembly with recoil spring out. Took the Assembly apart. Cocking lever ok,Bolt head carrier ok.Bolt head OK, Cam pin OK, Retaining pin ok. The Extractor, ejector and locking lugs all 6 ok. So what could it be. I looked at the firing pin and it seems it isn't protruding far enough out to hit and fire the primer. I am looking for the specs to the pin. I am trying to find how far out does it need to protrude out of the bolt Head. So this is what I have tried. I took an empty shell. Sized it and checked all the angles for the chamber. Stuck it in without a bullet or primer and tried to measure the length of the case inside the chamber. Went to take the brass out and it was hard to remove. I use a RCBS full length die. I took the same brass stuck it into my Varminter and fit like a dream. Also when I tipped the rifle the shell came out. I then took the same shell and put it back in the HK this time I slid the bolt forward to see it it would catch the brass and pull it out and see if it would eject. Didn't catch the brass So now I am thinking different length. So I put it into my AR15 and it was able to grab the brass with the ejector. It ejected the brass with no problem. I took some other brass lengths (1.760) and one (1.750). Still would not grab the shell in the HK, but did in the AR. I then checked all the measurements an the cases Dia at Rim and neck. Angle of neck and the cases are Within Normal limits. So now I put a primer into the brass. No bullet no powder. I put it into the HK chamber and Nothing. No pop and also bolt didn't catch brass to take it out of the chamber. A little push with my Coated Dewey and it came out. There was no mark on the primer at all. gain I did it with my AR15 and pop it went off and I was able to eject by pulling back the charge handle. So this is my reasoning. With out the data on the length of the HK firing pin I think it is to short. I guess I need a Go & No GO gauge to see. That is maybe the most recent problem I started to have. Sounds like I am on the right track with Defective Firing pin? This still doesn't explain why they are not being picked up by the Extractor. I guess the chamber should be measured for signs of tolerances being wrong. It just drives me crazy when such a fine looking rifle isn't working. The conversion is very simple. There is NO major area to cut out. It's a tab and it should not change any mag well tolerances from what I could see. I really like it and would love it to work right. I mean almost every gun or rifle has it's moments, And the Dam thing is so simple there aren't to many major things to go unless they are major breakdowns. Thought I write this and have you guys start thinking before I get there with what it could be. I really hope it could be fixed and stay in working order. Will see you Sat. Just give me a good time. By e-Mail or phone. Also maybe you could give me an idea what to do before I do come Sat. THANKS and sorry so long Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving who ever reads this post |

edpmedic, Just as a double check measure, make sure the bolt was replaced when the conversion was done. The new bolt should be lugged all the way around just like an AR15. If you see a "shaved" lug on the bolt, it is an original factory SL8 bolt and will cause you feeding problems. This would indicate it was not replaced. Also, check the EXTRACTOR to make sure it is "springy", and that the EXTRACTOR was correctly installed in the bolt. In the conversion, the HARDEST part is getting the new bolt set up correctly with the springs properly installed. I think your problem is gonna be there. |
Inspect the chamber it sounds like you have an obstruction in it. This would explain the brass not fitting, and the HK may have a safty feature like the m14 where the firing pin will not ride all the way forward unless the bolt is all the way in Battery. (alot of educated guesses here BTW..) That would be my take on the no bang bang part FTF got me. |
Ok...I got it to eject the ammo when I pull the charg handle back. I also loaded some ammo with out powder just primers and bullets. I got 5 out of 10 to go off. It still doesn't seem right all the time. I am waiting for Tim to show up it's almost 7:30. So I hope to make it out there by 10:00 Don't rush fr me please. I also hope he got some of those Night Sights in for my Glock |
THANK YOU Brian and Mike...I had a great time and you two guys had me cracking up. That range is fantastic and I will be up there to try the 600 and 1000 yds. To everyone who has been reading this thread. Mike and Brian where there waiting for me. We went the range with all different ammo. Has you know it always works right when you bring something to be fixed. Brian put it through it's paces. It worked except for the PMP ammo and some of the Black Hills Soft point stuff. Went back to the store and he cleaned it up and checked everything no problems. Of course when I go to shoot tomorrow it will act up again. Either way Brian was a true Gentleman about it. I am sure if there was anything really wrong it would have been taken care of without any problem. I will post pictures of the new toy's I got later, but I hope they get one of those HK-91 Clones that Goatboy bought out from under me....LOL...Goatboy you did good with that rifle. Again Thanks guys and Green18 was drooling all the way home about what he needs to buy next trip. |
Yep Just me and glad for it...Also the Black Hills 55grn soft point is being recalled. I had it blow out primers in my AR yesterday. Then a guy shooting next to me had the same problem. We bought the ammo same place. We both went back and sure enough Friday Black Hills called the shop and told them to remove the ammo. Other than that it even shot my PMP so it must just take some time to break in. |
