I have a relative that would like to get one.   As far as I know there are different levels of the license.  I believe he would only interested in the 01FFL to be a dealer.

Any links, information or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Thanks Soylent,

I should have thought of that.....
now, If I could figure out why I have to re-login here every 2 minutes, I would be a happy man...

I've been having the same problem here for the last two days.  As to the FFL, I'll tell you in a week, I've got paperwork coming from the ATF.

cool, thanks...Im curious as to how thorough the background check is.

As for the login problem....go to general discussions. There is a thread there that will help you.

I read it,  went to my profile, and hit submit and the login seems to be working now...something about the cookie config...

You have to fill out the forms, submit fingerprint cards in duplicate, submit two passport photographs, provide some information as to your licensed premises (rented, owned, etc.), answer some bonehead questions, and submit a check for the fees of the various licenses you wish to hold (FFL, importer, Class III, etc.). Fairly self-explanatory.

Im curious as to how thorough the background check is.

Obviously if you have a criminal past or a history of drug abuse, including excessive alcohol-related offenses, you won't be approved. However, if you can pass an FBI background check for a concealed carry permit or a Class III tax stamp, you'll be okay.

Does anybody have a good idea as to how ATF feels about working from home?  I'm thinking about getting an FFL for a side gunsmithing business and it seems feasible.  I know you have to comply with zoning regs, but this is kind of a gray area.

I think you answered your own question. If your town or municipality allows for businesses to be operated in residential areas (or if they don't have any zoning requirements like in Houston), then no problem. The BATF's attitude, however, is somewhat different. They'd rather you didn't operate from your home, but as long as you're complying with local zoning ordinances, there's not much that they can say about it. Your home owner's insurance may make it difficult (ask drjarhead about this).

Personally, I wouldn't want my home as my licensed premises. I had two incidents with a couple of PSYCHOS that have influenced me to take my licensed premises elsewhere. You have to balance this with what's feasible.

Well, it's not like I'm planning on hanging a "GUN SHOP" shingle out front; just doing transfers for a few people, taking mail-order gunsmith work, and maybe sitting at a gun show or two here or there.

I'm aware of that, but it only takes one deal with a freak to sour you. I'm just not happy with some people knowing my home address.
