I have a preban M4gery with a 14.5" Colt barrel and a permanently attached Phantom flash suppressor. I've had this setup for a few years and although the carbine is great, I've never gotten used to the look of the Phantom. I've recently run across the Gemtech Bi-Lock and am interested in having the Phantom removed and permanently installing the Bi-Lock in it's place. Understanding that I never intend to purchase a sound suppressor, realizing that the Phantom probably offers superior muzzle flash suppression, and understanding that there are those of you who would bust my chops for worrying about "looks" of an AR, I would welcome any feedback. Is this swap easily do-able and legal? Why isn't this combination seen more often? Is Kurt's Kustom the place to have the work done, or should I send the work to Gemtech? Thanks and sorry if this has been covered in the past. (Curses to the search engine gods.) http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid39/p4e15ec08adb9156dd949c03dd5344ec2/fd0be5c9.jpg |
Ask GemTech - If they will do it, then they may have a specific ATF ruling on there product. Otherwise the basic answers is No, Verboten |

ProfGAB101 - Thanks. I have requested clarification from Gem-tech. Just curious though. Why would this be forbidden w/out a BATF issued ruling letter from Gem-tech? From what I understand the Bi-lock flash hider is at least 1.5" in length which would bring the 14.5" barrel to 16" if permanently installed. Is the issue the fact that the Bi-Lock is designed to easily accept a sound suppressor and therefore subject to different rules as other flash suppressors? |

I have a permanent Bi-Lock on my 14.5" M4, installed by Dr. Dater personally. You can have Gem-Tech install it, or Kurt. Gem-Tech has a laser welder to weld the pin in place, which is nice because it doesn't require any refinishing, because the heat is so localized. Note that Gem-Tech doesn't have a storefront, so you have to arrange to send your upper to their business address (generally via phone). Of course, you can just buy the Bi-Lock (specify for permanent installs, and they'll give you a drilled one and a pin) and have it installed anywhere. -Troy |
