| I just took delivery of a new classic in 223. straight comb, 24" medium light 1 in 12 barrel. the barrel is not free floated and i want to use this with a bipod. is it typical to free float this type stock/ barrel combo? does anyone here have experiance with this. i know 700's are common and often hear that they are best free floated. i havent heard anything about this rifle though. |

I would shoot it as. If you glass it or free float the barrel and it does not shoot well you will not have a base-line to work with for finding the problem. You can get a good on out of the box. If you hand load try 52 gr. Sierra matchkings. They work in everthing. good luck.

"Don't fix what ain't broke" is what my grandpa always told me. What may be a general improvement might not be. You might have a tack driver straigh from the factory and you don't know it. ALSO, if your barrel isn't heavy contoured, the thinner profile might weigh on itself and give you shitty groups. THEN you'll have to pile lots of heavy bedding back in to undo the float. Shoot it atleast 200 rounds before you float it. By that time the barrel will be settled in and you'll have an idea of the accuracy potential. I floated my Custom Mauser without shooting it first and I regret it. You never know what hand you'll get dealt when you buy a gun. You might outshoot my PSS 223, who knows! Enjoy it though! |
| I appreciate the advice. Im gonna begin the routine by mounting the scope in warne mounts this weekend and trying out some blue box black hills 52gr. hollowpoint. i donot reload yet, but this may be the beginning of a good education. btw, watch six, i know your pss is floated and heavier contour than my classic. ill post my experience when i get some. its gotta shoot off a bipod or else! |
| Yes Alan, the PSS is floated. When I first got it, however, I already had a 700BDL in 22-250 that was NOT floated and had the standard hunting weight barrel. It shot as well as the PSS. I would still try your rifle out before you start making any "improvements". Watch-Six |
