I was showing my wife how to shoot the ar last evening. I gave her the gun and told her to pull back the charging handle and let it go...the bolt started to pick up the bullet, but the tip of the round seemed to get hung up on the feed ramp. I showed her how to use to forward assist if that happens again. I've never had this trouble before, after playing with it a bit, I found that it wouldn't do it if i pulled the charging handle back real fast and really let it slam home. Is this failry typical? sort of worried me. If she ever needs it, I don't want it to do that to her. I told her you really have to be rough with it. It diddn't have the problem loading a new mag from the bolt hold open position, nor did i have a failure to feed while firing. what do yall think? sloth |

i'm no expert, but it sounds to me like there just wasn't enough force to slam the bolt home. what kind of AR is it? what kind of ammo were you using? if the bolt group doesn't travel rear-ward far enough, it won't have the full force of the return spring (in the buttstock) to push it home (all the way forward). the fact that there are no similar problems while firing it, makes me believe that she was just being too gentle with the rearward action and therefore the subsequent return action was muted. have her practice the motion with some "umph" until it is second nature. good luck!

| i tried all three mags (i know thats sad i only have three). all usgi, it happened with all three (the parsons was the worse). as a side note, i've listened to many agruments that keeping mags fully loaded is okay. so i've had these three loaded with 30 rounds each for about four months now, yall don't think that's the problem do you? sloth |

It just sounds to me like she's riding the charging handle for a short distance as she's letting it go forward. I have the same thing happen when I'm screwing around with snap-cap plastic rounds and I let the bolt go forward to slow. Like any semi-auto, she just has to let go of the handle and let it snap forward after she's pulled it back as far as possible. |
