Anyone explain diff. in shells? Example: 12gauge(duh), 2.75(length), 3.25 dr.eq(?????), 1 oz.(?), 8 shot(?).

| 2 3/4 is standard length. #8 is small pellots(lite shot) for clays, 7 1/2 usually used for trap shooting. The lower the # the bigger the pellots. 00buck is the largest pellots. 1oz is the weight of the lead in the shot shell. Dram, I'm not too sure, but I think the higher the dram the more power. |

Dram equivalent is the power rating. It is a hold over from the black powder days. Black powder shells were rated in Drams so a modern shell that is a 3 dr. eq. is being compared to a black powder shell that was loaded with 3 drams of black powder. This was done when the switch was being made from black to smokeless powders so the shooter who was raised in the black powder era could understand what he was buying. I have noticed today that more shot shells are listing the velocity of the load on the box and I personally think the day is coming near when the Dr. Eq. rating is dropped. Tuco |
