First, as a newcomer to this site I'd like to congratulate the compliers of the 5.56mm FAQ - excellent information, and I've learned a lot!

I have written a development history of the assault rifle and its ammunition and posted it on my site, at:
http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/Assault.htm

Any comments welcomed!

Tony, now all you gotta do is translate that into English for us Americans!!  hehehe

See, we tend to think more in Grains, instead of Grams for weight, and Feet per Second instead of Meters per Second and Foot Pounds of energy, instead of Joules.

;)

OK, point taken!
To convert grams to grains multiply by 15.432
To convert m/sec to fps multiply by 3.28
To convert joules to ft lbs multiply by 0.742

This is in another of the articles on my site, on Basic Ballistics ;)

but Tony, we Americans are too lazy to do the math... and too lazy to look up how to do it!

Seriously, nice website, lots of interesting information.  It's too bad that in your country, you can't even come close to owning any weapons like any of the ones you write about.

I feel fortunate here that I can own what I do (I've got an AR15, M1, M1 Carbine and a few other 'military' style weapons), and have been able to experience firing some full auto (I've even got some video of it!).

You should come visit and let us know.  We'll be hospitible and let you try out some of our weapons.  :)

Full auto? it's illegal to own a semi-auto weapon in the UK. I don't know what they'd do to someone with a full-auto - he'd probably end up in the Tower of London having vital parts of his anatomy detached from his body...

Yeah, you'd probably get castrated for having a full auto weapon in the UK.  Nice, huh?  We yanks, especially here and places like AR15.com, are hearing how things are getting rather poor over there.  Crime going up, criminals getting weapons and using them at increasing rates.  Sliding down the slippery slope, huh?

Me, if I had the money for it, I could get a full auto weapon with only a few headaches, but enjoy my semi's with little to no problems.  In Texas, once I get my Concealed Handgun License, I can buy any semi auto firearm without having to go through even a simple background check.  I love Texas!!  :)

Yes, crime involving handguns has gone up a lot since they were banned. The only upside is that the great majority of the killings involve fights between drug gangs in well-defined areas of cities, so ordinary citizens aren't much affected. You could argue that these guys are performing a social service, getting rid of each other :)

Tony,

It's pretty much the same here... a majority of crimes involving guns are criminals assaulting and killing other criminals.  If we discounted those from statistics, murder rates and other violent crimes would probably drastically drop!

There probably are a lot of similarities, but there still remain some vast differences in our two countries.  ;)

I do have one issue with the link...

The Fedorov was the first assault rifle that was fielded. About 3,000 were issued to Czarist troops during WWI. That much was correct, but I have also seen accounts that about another 15,000-20,000 were produced by and for the Reds and saw use throughout the 1920s and 1930s. There were also another 20K or so built of a latter model. These all saw extensive use in the Finnish campaign, but were all pulled after reliability problems in late 1940. The only known examples are in museums, although the commies never threw anything away, and I bet there is probably a warehouse full of these in Russia somewhere.

In the accounts I have seen of the Federov the total production was only in four figures, but who's to know? The Soviets were not exactly known for publishing detailed records.

I'm quite facinated with the development of 'assault rifles' and military rifles.  Since I got the game Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, I got in a few debates about the weapons on a forum about the game, and consequently did a lot of research about some of the Axis weapons, specifically the MP44/ STG44, and found it rather interesting.

I myself am more interested in the Self Loading Rifles of the time.  I was particularly disappointed that EA only used the KAR 98 in the game, instead of using the G43.  Since they used the M1, I feel it didn't balance well with the KAR 98.  Hopefully they'll update that in the expansion coming out.

I have an M1 myself, and it's my favorite rifle of all time.  I have seen one of the Russian rifles, the SVT 40 at a gun show.  Wish I had the cash to buy it!

I suppose from the game designers viewpoint, the M1 and K98 were both the standard infantry weapons of their respective armies; the G43 was relatively little used.

In assessing any particular weapon, you have to look at the context. The German infantry squad was based around the MG 34/42, which provided most of the firepower. The riflemen were only there in support. In most other armies, it was the other way around, which made the rifles more important.
