I have a general question about 1911 internals.  Colt produced 2 distinct versions (that I am aware of), the model 70 and the model 80.  Do other manufacturers (SA, Kimber, etc) copy the model 70 or do they each have their own version of the internals?  Or perhaps a better question is, what is the "official" design of the 1911 and who makes it?

I believe tha other manufacturers copied the series 70 innards. Kimber now uses the Schwarz (sp?)  type safety that is a little different from the series 80.

Actually, the "original" design was pre-Series 70, and had a solid barrel bushing as opposed to the finger-collet type found on the 70s.  Both the pre-70 and the 70 have been extensively copied.

The biggest difference between the series 70 and 80 Colts is this: the firing pin safety. Col has the patent right to the 80 series firing pin safety for a 1911 I think. Most purists hate this because so the supposed drag it causes on the trigger.
