Never owned a Colt myself, but I hear a lot of folks talk about how their quality is spotty nowadays. Any truth to this, or just a few scattered problems?

Yes buy a colt they will be rare in a few years, as they SUCK, they make the Gold Cup in the custom shop as the regular moes don't know how to make a gun anymore, and the last gold cup I bought sucked it was loose and the trigger was bad. Colt customer service is a joke , on you that is. Well anyway you asked.

Yeah, none of my Colt's are worth a shit.  I should just throw them all away and go get some Glocks and Bushmaster's.  Oh, that's right, I already have the Colt's so I don't need to bash them.

They probably aren't as good as they used to be, certainly not leading the pack.  But to hear the folks who bash them around here you would think they won't even fire.  It's funny, really, no moderation.

My advice would be to check out the particular gun you want.  That's hard to do unless you are looking at a local dealer or show but that is really about the only way to know.  You have good and bad quality from any and all manufacturers.  This is no different that cars, jewelry or toasters.

Colt guys bashing Bushmaster and Bushmaster guys bashing Colts won't answer your question.

To me, the obvious answer to this question is that they have, at least in the past, had a reputation for fine firearms.  That may or may not be true but at least checking one out is worth your time.

Just go to the "Industry Forums" and look at different manufacturers and the complaints. That's where people comment the most about quality, reliability and service. You can pretty much come to the right conclusion after visiting there for a few day's.

I love my Colt's. Very partial to the pony.

I have an old Colt SP1 that I got for a smoke'n deal it's almost 30 years old. It shoots good and functions fine. I bought a Bushmaster Shorty, that also shoots fine. But I've had to clean up the feed ramps in order for it to feed right, I think it just needs to be shot a lot and break in the action. I'm happy with both.
Later,
Gavino

Bought an SP1 over 30 years ago, when that's all there was. Still have it.  Shoots good, functions fine (now, after I replaced the extractor spring with the new stronger style). Not nearly as well finished on the outside as the Bushie, and Rock River pieces that I've built up over the last 5 years. If you've got the money and want the prestige, get a Colt. If you want an AR that'll work and give you accuracy equivalent to the Colt, and don't want to pay for a name; RR, Bushie, and probably one or two other aftermarket brands will do just fine.

Dawes,

for top notch quality go with a Colt pre-ban.., yes !! they will cost more, but you will have an original & not a copy, (it will actually have stamped in the receiver "AR-15", no other rifle carries this designation !!) the Colt name will hold its value & even appreciate in value for years to come, somthing your grandchildren will appreciate.., all others will just be rifles, with a pre-ban rifle you can change the congiguration to almost anything you want.....

 i own several pre-ban Colt AR-15s..., & several "others/copys"......., there is a difference......

Well, toss 'em away my way, I'll give them a good home.

Well...at least the ones we're still allowed to have here in Taxachusetts [>Q]

I have yet to see the Bushmaster that can outshoot my Colt AR. Colt handguns, OTOH, are a bit less perfect. You've read of the horror stories of the Gold Cups, etc. If I were to buy an AR-15 again, I'd again get a Colt. A handgun would be a different story. Paying $1000 for a Colt revolver is not my idea of a bargin.

Colt's are alright, but with the plethora of AR manufacturers, Colt has just become one of the rest.

Rock River makes a good product.  Tight finish and fit.

Bushmaster.  Quality Parts says it all.

Armalite.  Nice quality.

DPMS.  Not too bad.

Olympic Arms.  Lately they have had a good product.  Prebans are good to go.  SGW lowers are nice.

Wilson.  High end ARs.  Better off with something else unless you have the money.

Fulton Arms.  Another High End Ar.

Hesse.  Lowers Ok, other than that a crap shoot.

ASA.  Need I say more?

Again, buy what you like.  If I need another AR, RRA comes to mind.

the last "new" colt I bought was a couple years ago.. a 1991A1 .45.

NIB, I had to send it back.. it wouldnt drop factory mags and a trigger problem.

"warranty" fixed it for free, not a trouble since... BUT NIB, should be that way when you FIRST get it!!!!

I've had a bunch of ARs... Colts, an Armalite, a Bushmaster, Eagle Arms, PWA, RRA... none work as well as my Colts (all prebans).  The Armalite had the nicest fit/finish of them all but had to go back to the factory twice because of imporper chamber specs.

Let me begin by saying that Colt pre-bans are possibly the finest AR series rifles you will ever own.

Sadly though, Colt like Winchester before it, is sliding into decay.

The continuing problem with Colt is simply that they are owned by the State of Connecticut.  So, the state has only two goals for this firm.  Those goals are not to (1) manufacture high quality firearms (2) at a competitive price.  The People's State of Connecticut wishes to ensure that their business venture (1) employs more than its fair share of over-paid unskilled workers in order to (2) produce firearms for the right people (military / LEO).

This means that the average consumer essentially pays through the nose to support the enlightened State of Connecticut's social engineering while receiving only a mediocre firearm.  Luckily Colt has brand name recognition and they can keep this scam going.

There is hope that the new president/ CEO (?) will put things right.  I have noticed that Colt's civilian offerings are starting to increase.  Perhaps with enough market pressure the once proud Hartford Horsey will return to prominence!

I love all my Colts. I have 4 pre-ban Colt AR and one Wilson. Nothing against other AR manufacturers, just got use to the name Colt.  Never had a malfunction with my Colts, althought I shoot only 2 and the other 2 are still NIB. I had some FTF with the Wilson with surplus ammo and that it is due to the Wilson SAAMI spec. Other than that it shoot great.

Own just one and only one Colt handgun, a pre re-issue Python.  I love that gun.

I've got a Colt 20" AR-15A2 Government Model that I purchased new in 1988.  It has all ways worked great and never given me a reason to want anything else.  I realize that a lot can change in 14 years, but I have complete faith in my Colt.

Preban Colts are very good, and so are Bushy postbans. I've owned both in the past as well as a few others, I would get another preban Colt if I could raise the money. It's the pony that makles it right for me because my first issued M16 had a Colt AR15 lower and all of my govt owned M16's were Colt including the NIB M16A2 that I got to break in sometime in June '83. That was the coolest weapon because no one had ever fired it other than at the factory after manufacture. My next AR might be a RRA due to $$, but a preban Colt AR15A2 Gov't is my ultimate goal and I will own one again GOD willing.

I feel they are all about (ABOUT I said) equal in there quality (HESSE EXCLUDED).  Most all of the manufacturers get there parts from the same places, have there barrels made at the same places and get the forged lowers from the same places.  FORD, CHEVY & DODGE they all run and they all have problems now and then, the same applies here.
