I have a Marlin Model 25N bolt action .22 rifle. I wasn't being very smart and I dissembled the bolt (don't do this unless you are a gunsmith or really know what you're doing!!!). Well anyway I have it back together, but I'm not quite sure if its back together correctly because, of course, its uncocked and there is no real way to see what you bolt looks like uncocked without doing this. Now the bolt won't go back in. Thanks for any help guys.

Pretty sure it needs to be in "cocked" mode.....then when you squeeze the trigger it should drop in............

It MUST be cocked in order to advance the bolt.  There is a trick to puting it back together the easy way, if only I could remember the trick.  I guess tonight I will have to take my bolt apart and figure out the "trick", I know it doesn't involve any tools.

Assuming it's assembled completely, just not cocked, put a glove on one hand (it's your hand, but I recommend this), grab the bolt handle with the other, pull the round part at the rear of the bolt back and rotate it clockwise 90 degrees and it should stay in place.  This takes a significant amount of force to counter the spring.  If you slip or don't get it done on the first try, there's a good chance of getting some skin caught inbetween the pieces you're trying to pull apart.  I recommend using a leather glove so if this happens, your glove gets bitten, not your finger.  But it's your hand, so do what you want.

Thanks, qwijibo. I am taking it out to the vice in the garage, I can't move the thing more than a few millimeters. I hope this works. It definitely has to be cocked to go in (the post has to line up with a groove in the receiver).
