Had a little spare cash last week, so I picked up a couple of new toys to play with (and bring to the AZ BR shoot).
#1 DPMS Panther A-15. I LIKE this gun (unfortunately, so does the girlfriend). Shoots real good so far, handles well, looks F'ing cool. The neighbors are classifying me as a whacko (but they all want to shoot it). Only bad issues so far: Barrel break-in. Shoot a round, clean it. For first 25 rounds. Then after every 10 rounds, up to 100. Pain in the ass, took a long time. Also, ammo restrictions. Not supposed to shoot Q3131 or Q3131A, PMP (never heard of it myself), Korean ammo, South African surplus or WOLF. This isn't a "This is what I heard" issue, I have the sheet from the factory-packed with the gun-in my sweaty little hands. Still, seems worth the hassle.
Toy #2: Ruger Mark II 30-06 w/Bushnell 3X9 scope. Was going to buy a Remington from WallyWorld and a Nikon scope at another place, but went to my favorite local gunshop (where I bought my Sig and Beretta) and they had a good price on the "packaged deal". Say what you want about Ruger rifles, but this is a REAL nice weapon, and it matches my .270 also (this factor played into the decision, I'll admit). Shoots real good, still need to get it set for long range, is currently centered-after only 12 shots-at 50 yds. Need to let the shoulder recouperate before I head out to bang away some more. Will likely remove the Bushnell scope next year and upgrade, and put the Bushnell on my Colt Match Target. Only bad issue so far: Funky 3 position safety. My .270 is a 1977 model and has the tang-mounted safety, which I really like. I'll learn to live with it.

If I couldn't shoot the S.A. surplus or the Q3131/Q3131A, It would suck.  This ammo is evereywhere and commonly used among us plinkers.   Both my Bushmasters eat this stuff up.  I would have passed...

Yeah, it does kinda suck that I'm NOT SUPPOSED to shoot that stuff in the Panther, but I still got a Colt I can feed it to. I looked at the Bushys before I bought the DPMS, but decided that I could use the $200 more that the Colts and Bushys cost for other uses. Maybe in the future I'll give the Panther to the GF and get a Bushy (she doesn't go shooting with me ALL the time....)

Is the ammo restriction issue due to the fact that the DPMS rifle has a .223 chamber rather than a 5.56?

Other than the Wolf and the Korean, the ammo you can't shoot would be what I usually look for. If the chamber is .223, you may be at risk using 5.56. DPMS would not limit your ammo choices without some reason.

Enjoy your new stuff, but be safe.

AR-10: No, I don't think that's it. The rifle is marked "223-5.56" on the side. Here's how the flier reads: *QUOTE*
Due to a number of calls and comments concerning AR-type rifles, we have incurred feeding problems with the following:
A) 1. Winchester "white box" part number Q3131 and Q3131A (made in Israel)
2. Korean ammunition
We have heard and reviewed several reports of problems with many manufacturers rifles using this ammunition. The problem appears to be bullet contour and the overall length of the cartridge, which is contacting the rifling before firing. This is creating a gas port pressure and chamber pressure higher than recommended, therefore causing feeding and extraction problems due to the increased bolt carrier velocity. In addition, there is accelerated fatigue on internal parts. There is also indications that brass may be oversized, which could create an unsafe condition.
B)1. PMP
2. South African produced surplus
We haved used this ammunition in the past for testing purposes and found that the brass is EXTREMELY soft and can "flow" into microscopic pores and grooves in the chamber, creating "sticky" extraction. This had been reported in many types of rifles, but is more prevalent in semi-automatic weapons.  *END OF QUOTE*
There is a little more on ammo, but this pretty much covers what we're discussing.
