Can anyone clear this up???

When did Sringfield start manufacturing pistols in Brazil? I thought in the 80s everything was made in the U.S., then they started using frames and slides made in Brazil and assembled in the U.S.

A guy emphatically told me today all Springfields major componets have ALWAYS been made in Brazil.

So what's the true story?

I'd like to kow the answer to this myself.
I was rather disappointed to find out that they were made in Brazil. It seems like a lot of money to drop on a Brazilian made pistol.

You guys are just figuring out that Springfield Inc. products are over priced? Picture a meeting of the minds at Springfield Inc; Lets see, We buy the importation rights on the HS2000 (priced under $300.00) we call it the XD and raise the price by $200.00. Here's another good idea. We buy up some surplus M-1 rifle parts kits, buy some foreign made cast receivers and Boyds replacement stocks. We give them a new parkerizing job and sell them for $900.00. Sure CAI sells the same rifle for $400.00 but we have the name. Springfield Inc. is, was and always will be over priced. I thought everyone knew their pistols are made in Brazil. What's really funny is hearing guys knock Taurus pistols as they brag up their Springfields.

That is what I understood.

Yes, SA has always been made in Brazil. That is, of course, the IL company & not the original.

All the frames and slides are rough forged in Brazil by IMBEL, and the final fitting and finishing is done in the US. Some of the real early Springfields had frames made in Germany. Some Springfield 1911s are stamped "Made in Brazil" and some aren't stamped. My Mil-Spec isn't stamped. I have no qualms about the quality. IMBEL isn't exactly known for putting out inferior products. HTH

Edited to add: We're looking for a few good handgunners... handguns.ar15.com/

I bought my Mil-Spec model in the summer of '94 and it is stamped. I like it just fine.

Imbel makes Springfield 1911 frames and slides in Brazil and the quality is as good as/or better than any other 1911. IMO SA 1911s are better quality than Colt 1911s made in the last 10+ years, I have owned both Springfield and Colt 1911s and the Springfields have been better pistols. I have 2 Springfields now; I got rid of the 2 Colts I owned.  Springfield 1911s are not overpriced they are reasonably priced against any other 1911 and cheaper than most.

Note that Imbel (along with DSA) makes the receiver of choice for building FALs.  They are no slouch.
