It's too small to fit anything useful. I can't even fit a bottle of oil into it.

EDIT: There, I changed the title.

A GI cleaning kit will fit in it
Link Posted: 6/26/2002 5:47:47 PM EDT
It was added to the rifle when the M16 was upgraded to a version of the A1 in Vietnam and was there to store the military issue cleaning kit. One of the old multipart rod and bristle kits fits easily into the A1 trapdoor and the following A2. That's all the door was there for, so grunts wouldn't loose their cleaning kit (which basically kept the rifle working).

Butt compartment? Why it's for toilet paper for your butt of course.

Well maybe I have the wrong sized cleaning kit, but the compartment is not nearly long enough for a section of cleaning rod, and not nearly wide enough for any bottles.

Just a minute, I'll give the dimensions. . .

OK, the opening is 1 7/8 X 1 inch, and is 8 1/2 inches deep and narrows to about 1 X 1 cemtimenter at the bottom

Damn! JasonF beat me to it.

Yeah, I set myself up for that one.

For target shooters, it makes a great place for a lead weight. Mine weighs about 3.25 lbs.

Just something the Army added to make it harder to clean when comeing out of the field.

Oh sorry,

I thought this was a different web site.

Stock compartment?
Link Posted: 6/26/2002 8:17:03 PM EDT
Buttstock...I wouldn't sweat it, they are mostly pulling your leg.

You can usually find a USGI cleaning kit for around 10-15 bucks. Check your local gun shop, gun shows etc. Bushmaster sells them, but the holder isn't on the online catalog. It's basically triangular like the space in the compartment. Tapco also sells them, but they are also not pictured online. If you have either of these catalogs you can see them there.

DPMS has them.

Most likely Brownells has them too.

I have one of those kits, has the ALICE clip to go on a web belt right?
to fit in the stock do you need to take the stuff out of the pouch? I know that might be a stupid question, but mine won't fit in it is in the pouch, I can't roll it tight enough to squeeze it in

Anything.
Of course, like always, it depends on what you use the AR for.
Link Posted: 6/26/2002 9:36:27 PM EDT
Funny,
Just occurred to me that it is a reasonable "charades" question to ask an AR owner:

Would it fit in the butt compartment?

Dumb comment, I know.

LOL, me too. Greenhorn, you might consider editing the title to this; and be VERY glad you didn't post it in General Discussion.

Cheaper than dirt has them also
Link Posted: 6/26/2002 9:42:19 PM EDT
I stuff in a plastic bag and fill it with lead shot to balance the heavy target barrel.
Link Posted: 6/27/2002 4:14:52 AM EDT
It's used to store extra butts. That way, if you get your ass shot off in combat, you can whip a new one out of the butt compartment.
Link Posted: 6/27/2002 6:02:02 AM EDT
I use'd it to hide my pogy bait while in the field. It'll hold enough beef jerky to last me two days, plus an extra BIC lighter. I always seemed to lose mine.

There is a different pouch, more of a sleeve that holds the kit for storage in the butt stock. It's grey rubberized nylon and can be found at gun shows and many of the places that sell U.S.G.I. surplus. The green nylon pouch is not for use in the stock. It's way to big.

Sharky: I roll the USGI cleaning rods in an old facecloth and put a couple of rubber bands around it. Keeps it all together and makes ZERO noise.
Link Posted: 6/27/2002 9:39:09 AM EDT
You put your weed in it.
Link Posted: 6/27/2002 12:51:39 PM EDT
Well I can fit the .308 USGI cleaning kits in the compartment on my AR10's. Oil bottle and all. Dang tight fit. As an alternitive, you could stick you lucky silver bullet round in thier. Some cash maybe. Nudie pics of your girl:-P. The brains of all the members of the 9th circit court shoudl fit, if you have a bio-hazard bag to use. . . .

I didn't think I'd have a chance in heck of fitting the cleaning kits in, but with some manipulation and squezing, it fit.

Lead weight, cleaning kit, motrin, NFA paperwork, OD triangular bandage (many uses), scooby snacks, spare parts, anything you can think of that you want or need that will fit basically.
