| when shooting a pistol or rifle whats the best way to control your breathing I usually take a deep breath then exhale then pull the trigger? how should I be doing it? |
|
That is the way I do it. The problem is that you don’t have air in you lungs migrating to the blood steam so you have a time window of just a few seconds. If you hold a full breath you are not relaxed during the shot. The volume of a partial breath cannot be duplicated. So you may push the rifle. |

Or as I was tought, Inhale, Exhale, 1/1000,2/1000, Pull the trigger. That should put the trigger pull between two heartbeats and your rifle should be settled. That is standing up. Benchrest isn't so much a factor. But the intent is to not be moving, and the space between heartbeats. Benjamin |

older shooters and older eyes have less time to dress the target get off the shot. my rifle coach says 8-10 seconds for a younger fellow that is shooting offhand and perhaps as little as 4-5 seconds for someone my age. his instructions are to continue breathing, but reduce the breaths to shallow ones as shot release time is approached. not only are muscles affected as the oxygen content in the blood flow is reduced, but the eyes/vision is affected, too. in prone position with a match rifle (apeture sights), i can see the bull moving in time with my pulse. only in this position can i try to release the shot between beats. kneeling and offhand, i can't get that steady to see the heartbeat in my sights. |
