Was going to spray acetone on my rifle to degrease it, but it's got plastic MBUS sights and plastic rail covers. I was told acetone eats plastic.
Ideas?

Isopropyl alcohol works like a champ and it dries fast.

I have used acetone on Glocks, MBUS, Grips and a few more gun things and have yet to have any negative reactions other than krylon paint or duracoat removal. A can of brake clean from autozone works fine as well. Just blow it out when done.

Denatured alcohol.

I know denatured alcohol evaporates quickly, but does acetone also evaporate quickly? Not sure why I'd have to blow anything off.

Acetone does evaporate fast but it will pull off most paints and finishes.

It does evaporate quickly, I blow it off because it dries natural leaving a funny looking haze in spots and gets down in the nooks and crannies where it takes more time to evaporate, when I blow it off or bake (flash) it off it never does that so I just got in the habit of doing it immediately.

i would never use harsh stuff on plastics. scrub it with warm water and dish detergent.let dry overnight.

Non chlorinated brake cleaner.

On my glocks when they do get cleaned, which is rarely. I put the solvents on and scrub then flush everything off with the brake cleaner.

Same with AR platforms. Solvents, scrub, flush.

Or you could take the mbus and other plastics off and not worry about it. I have not noticed any harm to the plastics or anything else using the brake cleaner

Those parts aren't plastic, they are polymer.

Acetone will not eat polymer. Keep it away from anything ABS.
But if you have ABS pats on your gun, might be time to upgrade anyway.
